In marketing-speak to make you wince, the corporation describes this new series as \u201cthe next iteration of the <em>Civilisations <\/em>brand\u201d, and follows on from a not-terribly-well-received 2018 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/tv\/2018\/03\/01\/civilisations-lord-reith-would-proud-epic-bbc-reboot-21st-century\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Civilisations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>Civilisations<\/em><\/a> that featured BBC favourites <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/books\/non-fiction\/best-and-worst-mary-beard-inte\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Prof Mary Beard;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Prof Mary Beard<\/a>, David Olusoga and Simon Schama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This one is a four-part series about the fall of four empires: Ancient Rome, Cleopatra\u2019s Egypt, the Aztecs and 19th century Japan, and bears little relation to the previous programmes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The second thing to say is that it has much to recommend it, despite the BBC\u2019s best efforts to make you switch off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Examples of the bad stuff? The episode on Egypt features, as one of the experts, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2025\/04\/24\/alastair-campbell-thinks-women-fighting-trans-activism\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alastair Campbell;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Alastair Campbell<\/a>. No, there isn\u2019t a renowned Egyptologist named Alastair Campbell. This is the usual one, Tony Blair\u2019s old spin doctor, and he wastes no time likening the Ptolemaic dynasty to the Murdochs. They document the decline of these mighty empires, supplemented by a close look at some <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2025\/11\/03\/egypt-artefact-sculpture-stolen-arab-spring-netherlands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:treasures from the British Museum;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">treasures from the British Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I have been guilty of wandering through the British Museum galleries, stopping at the odd exhibit \u2013 the Rosetta Stone, say, or the Egyptian mummies \u2013 but otherwise trying to take it all in at once and failing fully to appreciate what is on display.
