Kennedy, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/22\/us-news\/tatiana-schlossberg-granddaughter-of-jfk-discloses-terminal-leukemia-diagnosis\/\">recently revealed<\/a> she was diagnosed with terminal acute myeloid leukemia (AML) due to a rare genetic anomaly.<\/p>\n<p>In a personal essay published Saturday in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/the-weekend-essay\/a-battle-with-my-blood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New Yorker<\/a>, the 35-year-old mother of two wrote that she has an\u00a0inversion\u00a0of\u00a0chromosome 3, which significantly worsens AML survival rates.<\/p>\n<p>AML only accounts for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/acute-myeloid-leukemia\/about\/key-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1% of all cancers<\/a>, typically affecting people over the age of 65. Here\u2019s a look at Schlossberg\u2019s extremely rare genetic flaw.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an inversion 3 mutation?<\/h2>\n<p>An inversion 3 mutation happens when a segment of chromosome 3 breaks, flips and reinserts itself in reverse order. It can be inherited or acquired at some point.<\/p>\n<p>The third-largest chromosome in humans, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/download\/genetics\/chromosome\/3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chromosome 3<\/a> contains over a thousand genes that influence many bodily functions and physical traits.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Acute myeloid leukemia (seen here) is an aggressive blood and bone marrow cancer caused by genetic mutations in blood stem cells. <span class=\"credit\">De novo acute myeloid leukemia with inv(3)(q21q26.2) or t(3;3)(q21;q26.2)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s been linked to several genetic conditions, including certain cancers, Alzheimer\u2019s disease, Parkinson\u2019s disease and 3p deletion syndrome, a condition that can lead to developmental delays and intellectual disability.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s responsible for about 1.5% of AML cases.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the symptoms of this mutation?<\/h2>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Someone with inversion 3 may not know they have this abnormality until they are diagnosed with AML.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms include fatigue, fever, weight loss and night sweats.<\/p>\n<p>Those with inversion 3 mutation AML often have normal or elevated blood platelet counts, something Schlossberg\u2019s doctor noticed after she had given birth to her second child.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/21871-white-blood-cells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A normal white blood cell count<\/a> is typically between 4,500 and 11,000 cells per microliter.<\/p>\n<p>Schlossberg said that hers was 131,000 cells per microliter, far above the norm.<\/p>\n<p>A high white blood cell count can be a sign of leukemia, as the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/6212-acute-myeloid-leukemia-aml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bone marrow<\/a> produces abnormal cells called myeloid blasts that rapidly grow, according to the Cleveland Clinic.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is it diagnosed?<\/h2>\n<p>Inversion 3 can be <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/acute-myeloid-leukemia\/detection-diagnosis-staging\/how-diagnosed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diagnosed<\/a> with cytogenetic and molecular tests.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Caroline Kennedy is seen with her husband, Edwin Schlossberg, and their children, Tatiana and Jack Schlossberg, on Oct. 29, 2023.  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These tests can determine if the chromosomes have rearranged themselves as well as any mutations associated with leukemia.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Blood and bone marrow samples are taken as the first step to check for leukemia, which may then determine if there\u2019s an underlying gene mutation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does an inversion 3 mutation impact an acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis?<\/h2>\n<p>Inversion 3 mutation leads to the misexpression of genes like EVI1 and GATA2, triggering uncontrolled cancer cell growth.<\/p>\n<p>Inversion 3 gene mutation is associated with a low chance of recovery, high likelihood of worsening symptoms or a shorter life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p>Often <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10428194.2024.2367040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked to treatment-resistant diseases<\/a>, the treatment for inversion 3 mutations is extremely difficult due to how the cancerous cells multiply uncontrollably.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/6212-acute-myeloid-leukemia-aml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Treatment options<\/a> for AML can include\u00a0chemotherapy, targeted therapy or allogeneic stem cell transplantation using stem cells from donors.<\/p>\n<p>After a few months of chemo, Schlossberg mentioned in her essay that her older sister, Rose, 37, had been a match and donated her stem cells.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em> \u2018 The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u2018 Some details of this article were extracted from the following source celebrity.land \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tatiana Schlossberg, the youngest granddaughter of President John F.
