R&B\/funk group Labelle<\/strong>, best known for their iconic hit \u201cLady Marmalade,\u201d is the subject of a new rock opera now in development.<\/p>\n The show, titled Labelle, is being written by band member Nona Hendryx<\/strong> and Tony Award winner Lynn Nottage<\/strong>. It will follow the group \u2014 which also included Patti LaBelle\u00a0<\/strong>and Sarah Dash<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 from their beginnings\u00a0as a doo-wop group in the 1960s to their reinvention in the 1970s.<\/p>\n According to the description, the show plans to capture \u201chow Labelle broke barriers of race, gender, and genre\u2014 blending rock, funk, soul, and glam to forge a bold new sound that transformed the music industry and inspired generations of artists to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis rock opera will be an immersive celebration of artistic liberation, cultural defiance, and the timeless power of women who refused to be contained,\u201d Hendryx says. \u201cI cannot wait to bring our story to life in a way that honors our legacy while pushing the boundaries of what theatrical storytelling can be.\u201d<\/p>\n Labelle, the first Black vocal group ever to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone, released \u201cLady Marmalade\u201d in 1974. The song went on to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. They also had hits with such\u00a0tracks as \u201cWhat Can I Do for You?\u201d and \u201cNightbirds.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cLady Marmalade\u201d has been covered several times, most notably in 2001 by Christina Aguilera<\/strong>, Pink<\/strong>, Mya<\/strong> and Lil\u2019 Kim<\/strong> for the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge.
