Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in Wicked For Good Universal<\/span><\/p>\n This article contains spoilers for Wicked For Good.<\/p>\n Actors going off-script can only really go one of two ways \u2013 but for <\/span>Cynthia Erivo<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Ariana Grande<\/span><\/a>, it made for one of <\/span>Wicked For Good<\/span><\/a>\u2019s most touching moments.<\/span><\/p>\n The two are currently on the promo trail for the much-hyped Wicked sequel, and now director <\/span>John M Chu<\/span><\/a> has revealed that the grand finale took on a life of its own thanks to Cynthia and Ariana\u2019s improvisation.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking to <\/span>Today<\/span><\/a> about shooting the final number in the movie, the titular For Good, Jon recalled: \u201c<\/span>That\u2019s such an iconic song. We\u2019ve seen so many covers, so many people do those songs.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s the end of a two-movie series. How do you make it grand? Or feel like it earns the last song of the movie?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n His answer? Let Cynthia and Ariana take control, apparently.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019d sort of run through what it could be, and then right after the song where it would end, we just kept going, and [Jon] just didn\u2019t stop us,\u201d Cynthia explained during a joint interview.<\/span><\/p>\n The song arrives at the point in Wicked For Good where Cynthia and Ariana\u2019s characters \u2013 Elphaba and Glinda, respectively \u2013 have to part ways, and it\u2019s a tearjerker of a scene.<\/span><\/p>\n Cynthia explained that Glinda responding, \u201cwhat\u2019s going on?\u201d, to Elphaba telling her she has to go \u201cwasn\u2019t scripted\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI said, \u2018Don\u2019t worry, everything\u2019s going to be fine\u2019,\u201d she noted. \u201cNot scripted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe moment that I tell her I love her at the door, and she says it back, that was not in the script,\u201d Cynthia continued. \u201cThat was something that happened. All of that was sort of what she and I found in the room.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Everyone who\u2019s been following the promo tour for both Wicked films \u2013 intentionally or not \u2013 will know that Ariana and Cynthia\u2019s close bond (and <\/span>\u201cholding space\u201d<\/span><\/a> for each other) has been a core part of the musical adaptation.<\/span><\/p>\n For that reason, director John gave them the freedom to work out how their characters would bid farewell to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI think both of us were just figuring out how each of our characters would actually say goodbye,\u201d Cynthia said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cEven through the song, there wasn\u2019t much direction. He just let us sing to one another.
