Shirley Henderson, who played Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter<\/span><\/strong> series, opened up about how she landed the role. She recalled being initially skeptical about playing a 14-year-old when in real life, she was 37 at the time.<\/p>\n In an interview with The Independent<\/a>, the Scottish actress shared that she had been advised to conceal her age before going into auditioning for Harry Potter.<\/p>\n \u201cThe casting director said, \u2018Go for it \u2013 and don\u2019t mention your age,\u201d Henderson recalled. While she did her best impression of a 14-year-old, she admitted to doing \u201ca wee bit of moaning\u201d during her audition, which helped her land the role.<\/p>\n Albeit a side character, the Hogwarts\u2019 long-standing lavatory occupant remains one of the franchise\u2019s most iconic figures. However, the Summerwater actress shared that her work in the movie yielded her no fame. \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody recognized me at all,\u201d she said, adding that it was still a \u201cnice job.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier this month, the Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary actress told RadioTimes<\/a> that she \u201cdidn\u2019t know\u201d who Harry Potter was. She added, \u201cBut my sister, who was staying with me, had read the books. Still, I wasn\u2019t convinced I could play a 14-year-old girl because I was in my 30s at the time. But I spoke to the casting director Karen Lindsay-Stewart and she said, \u2018I haven\u2019t told them your age\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n The now\u2013now-60-year-old actress recalled dressing up as a schoolgirl for the audition. She remembered wearing a white shirt, a black skirt, and a ponytail, which she said made her feel \u2018ridiculous.\u2019 Although it took months before she heard back, the producers eventually offered her the role.<\/p>\n Henderson believes that the age gap ultimately worked in her favor. She said, \u201cMyrtle is an old person in a young person\u2019s body, and because she\u2019s ghostly, there\u2019s a kind of mistiness. You\u2019re not looking closely at my face, so we could get away with it.\u201d Her perspective makes sense given the fact that Myrtle has haunted the Hogwarts\u2019 lavatory for decades.<\/p>\n Shirley Henderson first appeared as Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).
