Here\u2019s the bottom line: If you liked the first part, you\u2019ll enjoy the second half. If you didn\u2019t like the first \u201cWicked\u201d film, I can\u2019t imagine going to the finale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I found the first part delightful, with magical images, gorgeous songs and a lovely spin on \u201cThe Wizard of Oz.\u201d The second part is darker, with doomed romance and even a death, but it\u2019s just as enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The second half of Jon M. Chu\u2019s film draws closer to the \u201cWizard of Oz\u201d books and the long-beloved film. In the original book \u201cThe Wonderful Wizard of Oz,\u201d by L. Frank Baum, the shoes are described as silver. This movie sticks to that material, which also includes animals having the ability to speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Front and center are Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande,) as \u201cfrenemies\u201d whose lives intertwine in an unbreakable bond that continues, we suppose, long after the last frame of the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Glinda is adored by all of Oz, and loves the attention, especially when she can travel around in a bubble delivered to her by Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a flashback, Glinda\u2019s past reveals an early deception, and we realize that many of the main characters \u2013 including, of course, the \u201cWonderful\u201d wizard (Jeff Goldblum) himself \u2013 are not who they pretend to be. There\u2019s a theme about betrayal and regret that runs deeply into these characters, who are sympathetic even at their villainous worst.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The strain of the two stars\u2019 friendship got to me \u2013 I shed a tear or two at the end, and you might, too.
