Apparently not.<\/p>\n<p>The exhausting romantic comedy \u201cEternity\u201d imagines what would happen if a recently deceased woman encountered both her first husband who died in the Korean War and her second husband of 67 years in the afterlife \u2014 and was forced to pick.<\/p>\n<p>I, meanwhile, will nitpick.<\/p>\n<p>Why must Limbo look like a 1968 insurance salesmen convention?<\/p>\n<p>Elderly Larry (Miles Teller) keels over at a gender-reveal party and wakes up as his younger self in what appears to be a retro old Hilton.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>There are booths advertising different potential eternities like timeshares. There\u2019s Man Free World, Catholic World, World of Satanism and a version of Paris where people speak English in French accents. Several options have been discontinued because they\u2019re no longer politically correct.<\/p>\n<p>Is there an End Credits World?<\/p>\n<p>Because this overstretched gag is a \u201cBlack Mirror\u201d that could use some Windex.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Tenner and Callum Turner wind up in an afterlife love triangle in \u201cEternity.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He meets his A.C \u2014 afterlife coordinator, blech \u2014 Anna (Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph), who tells him he has a week to choose an infinite future.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simplistic, uninsightful and mostly unfunny to reduce death to a cheeseball corporate presentation. Not to mention old-hat. \u201cBeetlejuice\u201d did it far better and more stylishly 37 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Larry\u2019s wife Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) quickly follows him to the grave and arrives to find both him and Luke (Callum Turner), her hunky first spouse from when she was very young.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Larry (Miles Taller) and Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) end up in Limbo after a 67-year marraige. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A spiritual love triangle commences and, really, the ethereal beyond is not noticeably different from earth. People go to bars. They take commuter trains. Time moves at the same pace. It\u2019s all very bland, like a moving walkway at the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Despite hating director and co-writer David Freyne\u2019s sense of humor and lazy world building, the idea of running into all your past loves in heaven is a smart and lively one. When your mind wanders \u2014 and it often will! \u2014 you put yourself in the characters\u2019 confused shoes.<\/p>\n<p>And the three actors give strong and touching performances, especially Olsen and Teller, who have to be old and young at once without making it cartoonish or awkward.
