I\u2019ve been on antibiotics for a year and have had to eat soft foods only.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>McCarthy\u2019s dental woes persisted after shooting her annual holiday card with husband, Donnie Wahlberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had two more mouth surgeries even after that photo was taken,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve been pretty unlucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/dental-devices\/dental-implants-what-you-should-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dental implants<\/a> are often used to restore someone\u2019s ability to chew food and provide support for crowns, dentures and other prosthetics.<\/p>\n<p>These implants generally consist of three parts \u2014 the implant post (the root), the abutment (the connector) and the crown (the visible tooth).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>While rare, failed dental implants can happen for several reasons, including infection or failed integration. <span class=\"credit\">Gecko Studio \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While implants have a 95% success rate, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/connect.aaid-implant.org\/blog\/success-rate-dental-implants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Academy of Implant Dentistry<\/a>, there\u2019s still room for error.<\/p>\n<p>A failed dental implant will feel <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/dental-devices\/dental-implants-what-you-should-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loose or painful<\/a>, potentially <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/myoms.org\/what-we-do\/dental-implant-surgery\/are-you-a-candidate-for-dental-implants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making chewing difficult<\/a> or spurring gum inflammation or swelling. Here\u2019s a look at the problems that can fuel a failed one.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infection<\/h2>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Most likely the cause of McCarthy\u2019s struggles, an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29926957\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infection from bacterial plaque<\/a> can affect the tissues around the implant.<\/p>\n<p>Also called peri-implantitis, this infection can cause inflammation of the gums and even lead to bone loss.<\/p>\n<p>Infections can be prevented by keeping the area as free of bacteria as possible. Anti-microbial mouthwashes help. Infections can be <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3612185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">treated<\/a> with antibiotics. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Failed integration<\/h2>\n<p>Around 5% to 10% of failures occur when the implant doesn\u2019t fuse with the bone, a process called <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10581840\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed osseointegration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The jawbone needs to be strong enough to support the parts of tooth loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medical conditions<\/h2>\n<p>Underlying health issues can cause your body to reject a dental implant.<\/p>\n<p>These <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.perio.org\/for-patients\/periodontal-treatments-and-procedures\/dental-implant-procedures\/peri-implant-diseases\/\" target=\"_blank\"
