\n\u201cShe\u2019s choosing the more formal route, which is a matter of personal preference,\u201d Meier says of Meghan, adding, \u201cThis is her choice, which is the point\u2014that it is her choice. And so, for whatever reason, this is how she feels the most comfortable being introduced.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they have the title, they are able to use it. It is their title,\u201d Meier continues. It\u2019s comparable to a doctor choosing to use their title or to eschew it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether you\u2019re prime minister, president, or a duchess or princess, it is up to you how you would like to be introduced and how you would like to introduce yourself,\u201d Meier adds.<\/p>\n
How are other members of the royal family introduced when they walk into rooms? Again, it is a matter of personal preference. Meier points to Prince William, who often introduces himself as he walks into a room\u2014as opposed to someone else introducing him\u2014and prefers to simply be called William rather than the Prince of Wales when it is a one-to-one meeting or a smaller gathering. \u201cNow, if he\u2019s being introduced at a state banquet or something like that, it\u2019s a whole other ball game,\u201d the etiquette expert explains. \u201cThat is what we have seen in recent years from the younger modern royals.\u201d<\/p>\n
But, as Meier caveats, anyone with a title is entitled to use it. \u201cSo that being said, she\u2019s done nothing wrong,\u201d she says of Meghan. \u201cThe protocol was correct in terms of her ability to use it.\u201d The Duchess of Sussex is also Meghan\u2019s legal title, so she\u2019s able to employ it for both personal and professional use.<\/p>\n
That said, while the use of her title passes the protocol test, from an etiquette perspective, Meier points out that it\u2019s actually backwards\u2014in the specific case of the Upper East Side brownstone, the guest<\/em> should be announced, not the person the guest is coming to see. \u201cInterestingly, the correct etiquette would\u2019ve been to announce the journalist,\u201d Meier says. <\/p>\nThere is no thick book of royal protocol sitting somewhere in Buckingham Palace, Meier clarifies. \u201cEvery situation is treated as a one-off,\u201d she explains, though she adds that, in the royal household, \u201ceverything is very planned and orchestrated.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSimply, protocol is the way that we do things to show respect,\u201d Meier says. \u201cThat\u2019s all it is. So there\u2019s no etiquette handbook. There\u2019s no protocol handbook.\u201d She adds, \u201ceach royal is trusted to act and represent their title with respect and to do so the best that they know to do. And I think each royal is left trusted to do that in their own way, I would say.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
