Her parents are <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/14\/entertainment\/stranger-things-joe-chrest-ted-wheeler-reacts-to-glow-up-reactions\/\">Ted (Joe Chrest) <\/a>and Karen (Cara Buono), and her older siblings are Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer). Because she\u2019s so much younger, she\u2019s never really been involved in the action \u2014 until now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ever since the Netflix hit first premiered in 2016, it has followed characters such as Mike and Nancy as they deal with sinister monsters from the Upside Down dimension. Holly\u2019s their little sister who appeared infrequently.<\/p>\n<p>One reason why her prominence seems so random is because it wasn\u2019t planned from the start.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Series creators the Duffer brothers <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/stranger-things-season-5-holly-wheeler-centerpiece-duffer-brothers\/\">told Screen Rant <\/a>that Holly \u201cbeing a centerpiece\u201d of this season was \u201ca discovery\u201d that came along as they were working on Season 5.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Duffer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/millie-bobby-brown-tom-cruise-final-season-stranger-things-1236422181\/\">told The Hollywood Reporter <\/a>their reason for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, and Eduardo Franco as Argyle in \u201cStranger Things\u201d Season 4.  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler and Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair in \u201cStranger Things\u201d Season 5.  <span class=\"credit\">COURTESY OF NETFLIX \u00a9 2025<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs we were working on Season 5\u2033 he said, \u201cwe talked a lot about wanting to recapture some of the spirit of the first season,\u201d which had kids as many of its main characters. <\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that the show\u2019s former child cast \u2013 such as Millie Bobby Brown who was 12 in Season 1 and is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/14\/entertainment\/millie-bobby-brown-snaps-at-stranger-things-red-carpet-photographer-you-smile\/\">now a 21-year-old wife and mother offscreen<\/a> \u2013 are, \u201cold now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Duffer added, \u201cso we had to find an actual child to bring into the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Season 1, Holly did see the flickering lights in Will (Noah Schnapp\u2019s) room, and a hint of the monster \u2013 as a reference to \u201cPoltergeist.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Season 5, we learn that Holly has an imaginary friend named \u201cMr. Whatsit,\u201d taken from the classic novel, \u201cA Wrinkle in Time\u201d by Madeleine L\u2019Engle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her mom, Karen, is worried that Holly is too old to have imaginary friends and that her behavior is abnormal. As usual, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/14\/entertainment\/stranger-things-joe-chrest-ted-wheeler-reacts-to-glow-up-reactions\/\">her dad, Ted, is dismissive<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption> Twins Anniston and Tinsley Price, who played Holly in the first four seasons.  <span class=\"credit\">Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler and Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler in \u201cStranger Things\u201d Season 5. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But everything changes in the Wheeler household when a Demogorgon monster comes, attacks the Wheeler parents \u2013 leaving them alive but wounded, and in the hospital \u2013 and abducts Holly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s later revealed that her imaginary friend was really the villain, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), and he has a sinister scheme to abduct children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He puts Holly in the old Creel house in the Upside Down, and assures her that her family will soon join her. He also cautions her not to leave the house, for fear of \u201cmonsters\u201d in the surrounding woods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Holly wears a blue dress and a cloak that costume designer Amy Parris told The Post was, \u201ca golden ocher color.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat felt right because it\u2019s not too yellowy, it\u2019s not too bright, it\u2019s not too crayon. It has a vintage feel,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe liked the old gold color of it, and it really helps her pop throughout the environment. She\u2019s often in green, or she\u2019s outside a lot. Final seasons should be focused on wrapping up plotlines of the main characters we\u2019ve been following for 10 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It feels similar to the Dawn plot on \u201cBuffy the Vampire Slayer,\u201d but not done in an ironic self-aware way, like the latter show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On \u201cBuffy The Vampire Slayer,\u201d Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was an only child, until suddenly Season 4 introduced her younger sister, Dawn (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/02\/27\/entertainment\/sarah-michelle-gellar-breaks-silence-on-michelle-trachtenbergs-death\/\">Michelle Trachtenberg<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All the other characters acted like Dawn had been there all along, leaving the audience feeling gaslit. Who was this random new character that the show was pretending had been there the whole time? The audience was vindicated that no, Dawn <em>hadn\u2019t <\/em>been there all along.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStranger Things\u201d Season 5 feels similar \u2013 as if the show is saying, \u201cYou know Holly! Your favorite important \u2018Stranger Things\u2019 character!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Dawn, Holly really has been there all along.
