The \u201cWitch in Disguise\u201d video above \u2013 kind of like Genesis\u2019 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Yq7FKO5DlV0&amp;list=RDYq7FKO5DlV0&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201cLand of Confusion\u201d<\/a> reimagined by whoever did Tool\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nspxAG12Cpc&amp;list=RDnspxAG12Cpc&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201cSober\u201d<\/a> clip \u2014 follows the mini-movie for Miami-real-estate-is-true-true-crime jam <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SpLvoNYjsTg\">\u201cMurder in the Basement (Eat You Alive),\u201d<\/a> but the music is a burbling melting pot of rock and alternative spices, calling to mind everything from Stevie Nicks, Blondie, and Tina Turner to The Breeders, Lucious Jackson, and Elastica. Yep. It\u2019ll put a spell on you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-awktober-fka-vix-didn-t-know\">Awktober (fka Vix) \u2014 \u201cDidn\u2019t Know\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Didn&#039;t Know\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YNYmsLn0nuA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>If you\u2019re desperately seeking something real to counter the generative AI-driven artifice of our current moment, it\u2019s difficult to think of a stronger antidote than <em>Vicious Cycles<\/em> by old school\/old soul torch singer Awktober. Recorded with all live instrumentation and no looping, the music here is an indie spin on the type of smooth jazz you might hear in the coolest lounge in town, infused with a pop sensibility and Afro-Caribbean swing. As for Awktober she brings a restless creativity to her vocals \u2014 and the range, bravery, and vulnerability to pull it off. Some decent touchstones might include Sade, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miaminewtimes.com\/music\/interview-with-cat-power-on-her-covers-album-and-living-in-miami-15240630\/\">Cat Power<\/a>, and Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. \u201cI\u2019m here to be the voice for those who put a ton of walls up that we think are made of steel and cement, but it\u2019s merely made of the most breakable material because really we just wanna be loved but are too afraid to say it,\u201d she <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DPrMFuojmFm\/?img_index=1\">writes<\/a>. Well on her way.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-better-strangers-grifter-live-at-gramps\">Better Strangers \u2013 \u201cGrifter (Live at Gramps)\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Better Strangers - LIVE AT GRAMPS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EWsaLvZ0oWg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><em>New Times<\/em> was in the house for this scorching live set back in July at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miaminewtimes.com\/music\/whats-next-for-classic-wynwood-venue-gramps-as-closing-nears-40492272\/\">Gramps<\/a>, and can say without reservation it is a real gift that it was captured for posterity. Okay, yes, the Better Strangers lineup includes Phil Collins\u2019 son Nic on drums. And, yes, Phil Collins rules, and the beats on \u201cSussudio\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Lose My Number\u201d are some of the hardest things ever. (Please make my dream of a Godflesh X Phil Collins collaboration come true, Nic.) <\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s move past that as quickly as possible to the incredible prog-adjacent instrumental alt-rock of this trio \u2014 rounded out by guitarist Joe Rodriguez\u00a0and bassist\u00a0Yannick Waingarten\u00a0\u2014 which has perfected a sound that exists somewhere between early Tool and latter-day Mastodon with some of the more driving, rock-centered parts of MUSE thrown in for good measure, equal parts aggressive and enlivening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-blood-orchid-king-of-the-damned\">Blood Orchid \u2014 \u201cKing of the Damned\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blood Orchid - King Of The Damned\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UabYordqmyM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Glowing a crimson red and oozing a warm viscous pus; the Blood Orchid grows through the decomposed remains of the previous life forms of Niko Javan.\u201d That\u2019s quite an opening line for a press release, but it\u2019s nothing compared to the unhinged and expansive Blood Orchid full-length from which the title track above is drawn. Imagine a tag-team cage match with goth and Skinny Puppy-esque industrial facing off against pre-MTV nu-metal and dark hip-hop, and you\u2019ll be in the sonic neighborhood. (And keep in mind this is a one-man band!) <\/p>\n<p>The battle goes back and forth \u2014 sometimes one subgenre element gets the upper hand and then the other \u2014 but what\u2019s cool about Blood Orchid is that no advantage is permanent and, though the project has a definite defining sound, you never quite know what\u2019s coming at you next.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bushy-b-meet-me-in-the-305\">Bushy B \u2014 \u201cMeet Me in the 305\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bushy B - Meet Me In The 305 (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q5L01GgNkj0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>When it comes to independent hip-hop, Miami is most definitely in its Bushy B era: The rapper has more than 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and his track\u00a0 \u201cScared\u201d\u00a0 has racked up over 15 million streams. Now he\u2019s back with the cinematic, R&amp;B-infused epic \u201cMeet Me in the 305,\u201d a song that, in three short minutes, not only demonstrates Bushy B\u2019s range but also tells a full, vulnerable, and relatable love story. It all flows so naturally and with such an authentic vibe \u2014 this is the sound of an assured artist ready to plant his flag at the top of the mountain.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-carlo-vieux-retounen\">Carlo Vieux \u2014 \u201cRetounen\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carlo Vieux \u2013 Retounen | Official Visuals | Visuel Officiel (2025)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r-GlKuwv-WI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Carlo Vieux may have started his musical journey as co-founder of the New York City <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/wikotr.com\/index.php\/what-is-konpa\/?srsltid=AfmBOooYo1b4kDV3P8yXobYcEIAPRWzTjxjB9x0LETaXv89qugpKEAB7\"><em>konpa<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>collective CaRiMi \u2014 which enjoyed global success before disbanding in 2016 \u2014 but the now Miami-based Haitian musician is far from done as he proves beyond a shadow of a doubt with his epic debut solo album <em>CARL\u014c<\/em>. Balancing traditional and contemporary influences throughout, we really could\u2019ve picked any one of its thirteen tracks to spotlight and given you \u201cwhoa\u201d vibes, so we took the easy way out and picked the album opener. (The music video for the first single, \u201cWilly,\u201d can be seen <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0lFeHpOBODI\">here<\/a>.) <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">The EP, Daniels tells\u00a0<em>New Times<\/em>, was \u201cinspired by personal and<\/span> topical situations I\u2019ve experienced as a native Miamian, a third-generation Floridian, and someone who left the city for a long time only to return and appreciate its many beauties and flaws. And dogs.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kanis-conga\">Kanis \u2014 \u201cConga\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Conga\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U6n5KpUtmZA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Haitian-American rapper and singer Kanis is no stranger to vibrant, diverse palettes \u2014 she also <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">creates incredible fine art under the moniker\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/niska\/?hl=en\">Niska<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 but the way she blends traditional Haitian music, afrobeat, R&amp;B, hip-hop, and world music on her new LP,\u00a0<em>Ego,<\/em><\/span> is next level. \u201cConga\u201d is a great appetizer, but don\u2019t sleep on the other sixteen tracks because, as with everything Kanis does, synergy and context are key.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-loui-daniels-hide-amp-seek\">Loui Daniels \u2014 \u201cHide &amp; Seek\u201d<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Loui Daniels - Hide &amp; Seek (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o0gdCzB8hUI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><em>Yes.<\/em> If this infectious synth rock anthem is any indication of what awaits us on Loui Daniels\u2019 debut full-length debut <em>Genesis<\/em>, we are in for a serious treat. Landing at the exuberant nexus of glam, new wave, and industrial pop, Miss Michigan describes themselves as \u201cearly White Stripes partying with the Stooges at one of Prince\u2019s legendary gatherings\u201d \u2014 and, as \u201cLet\u2019s Dance\u201d ably demonstrates, the trio of former NYC rocker Gus Saenz, guitarist Edward Farhat, and drummer JP Espiritusanto ain\u2019t wrong.
