But the long wait could soon be over.<\/p>\n<p>CityPlat, the owners of the property, have announced several new<br \/>\ntenants to fill out the spaces in the building. The first is expected to open within a few months, likely in spring or summer of 2026. Once everything is open it&#8217;s expected to have various entertainment, dining and exercise options.<\/p>\n<p>Gold\u2019s Gym will take up one of the larger sections of the<br \/>\nbuilding at more than 30,000 square feet. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a roughly 20,000 square feet facility, a basketball<br \/>\ntraining facility called Final Score is opening.<\/p>\n<p>Other tenants include Nail Lab, 810 Billiards &amp; Bowling, Vavela Caf\u00e9 and Mythic Golf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited,\u201d Vincenzo Verdino<br \/>\nwith CityPlat said. \u201cWe want this property to become a fabric of the community<br \/>\nhere which is why we\u2019re curating active-entertainment locations to kind of<br \/>\nbecome additive to the community as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Verdino anticipates the first business to open in the second quarter of 2026 with everything up and running by late next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0WRAL previously reported the site has zoning approval for\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/business\/kmart-redevelopment-western-blvd-january-2025\/\">buildings up to seven stories<\/a>. But if there&#8217;s demand for more development on site, the owners could seek permission to build even higher.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Verdino showed WRAL around the<br \/>\nbuilding. The former big box store is more like shoe boxes now. Metal dividers<br \/>\nsplit the massive building into a number of different spaces for tenants. Even<br \/>\nwith the amount of work left, it\u2019s hard to see the history of the K-Mart there,<br \/>\nif not for the stained fa\u00e7ade emblazoned with the former Big K logo that\u2019s<br \/>\nsince been removed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope people aren\u2019t going to<br \/>\nrecognize this space,\u201d Verdino said. \u201cIt will still have the footprint of the<br \/>\nold building. We\u2019re really hoping it looks modernized, but we\u2019re still using<br \/>\nthe old bones of the dinosaur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the progress won\u2019t end there.<br \/>\nVerdino says there are plans to redevelop around the old box store that will<br \/>\ntruly make it hard to imagine it was ever there in the first place. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan is to go vertical to some<br \/>\ndegree on the parking lot,\u201d Verdino said. \u201cIt\u2019ll largely depend on what that<br \/>\nrezoning case comes out as far as the flexibility we would have. Certainly what<br \/>\nmakes the most sense is some form of mixed-use. If it were being developed<br \/>\ntoday, it would certainly be a mix of residential and retail. We\u2019re leaving<br \/>\noptions open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So if you\u2019ve driven down Western<br \/>\nBlvd. over the last decade plus, you may not give a second glance to the<br \/>\ngraveyard of a big box eye sore. But give it a third look soon, because big<br \/>\nthings are on the way. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe I\u2019m an eternal optimist, but<br \/>\nI see that as an incredible benefit,\u201d Verdino said. \u201cIt\u2019s been largely<br \/>\nforgotten when people are driving by and you don\u2019t notice it at all after a<br \/>\nwhile and then, you can see life here now.
