Ferrando first came to New York in 2008<\/span>, and spent the next year cruising the streets on a\u00a0second hand bike, on a\u00a0pilgrimage to where fabled nightclubs like Paradise Garage, Mudd Club, and\u00a0<\/span>Studio 54<\/span><\/span><\/a> once reigned supreme. Through friends, he met David Mancuso and danced with the Loft family, delving deep into the culture through music, dance, literature, and art \u2013 which would find form in 2019<\/span> via his <\/span>Instagram account<\/span><\/a>. As the account began to grow, people reached out to share their stories and memories the photographs had touched, including the very people in the photographs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>What started as an emerging love story with the city and its brilliant musical past soon turned into an ocean of references, DJs, parties, and unforgettable stories,\u201d says Ferrando. From these seeds, <\/span>I\u00a0Hear Music In the Streets\u00a0<\/span><\/i>was born.\u00a0Organised across eight thematic chapters\u00a0that explore the relationship between people (\u2018Bronx Boys\u2019, \u200b\u2018<\/span>Black Is Beautiful\u2019, \u200b\u2018<\/span>Our Latin Thing\u2019, and\u00a0\u200b\u2018<\/span>The Oddballs\u2019) and place (\u2018The Subways\u2019, \u200b\u2018<\/span>The Beach\u2019, and \u200b\u2018<\/span>Days of Disco\u2019), the book brings together the work of over 50<\/span> photographers including\u00a0<\/span>Martha Cooper<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Jamel Shabazz<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Helen Levitt<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Joe Conzo<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Susan Meiselas<\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>Joseph Rodriguez<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>Every photographer has a\u00a0personal style, just as a\u00a0musician or a\u00a0DJ<\/span> brings their own character to their music, their selections, or their mixes,\u201d says Ferrando. \u200b\u201c<\/span>There\u2019s a\u00a0beautiful black-and-white image by<\/span> Arlene Gottfried<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/u>showing Marsha P. Johnson with a\u00a0blonde boy. One day, someone DM<\/span>\u2019d me saying that he was that boy \u2013 that during his childhood he had lived in the same building as Marsha, and that she was a\u00a0beautiful human\u00a0being.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
