expander that gradually widens the upper jaw to create more space for crowded permanent teeth and correct bite issues.<\/p>\n<p>Parents have been raving about these glow-up gadgets, even though they resemble scaffolding, the upkeep can be stressful, and they may make eating and talking difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not as bad as you think,\u201d Cabral said, \u201cand it\u2019s really [a] millisecond of time in their whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does the palate need expanding?<\/h2>\n<p>The palate is the roof of your mouth, which separates your nasal and oral cavities and plays a crucial role in your breathing, speaking and chewing.<\/p>\n<p>Many people have a narrow palate like Valentina, with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8234026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one study of orthodontic care finding it<\/a> in 80% of participants.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Valentina got a removable palate expander aggressive thumb-sucking or chronic nasal obstruction, resulting in crowded teeth, speech issues and breathing difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>Since the palate is made of two parts, the palate expander works by slowly pulling both halves apart.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cPalatal expanders are most effective when the jaw is still growing, typically between the ages of 7 and 14,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/glaserorthodontics.com\/westchester-orthodontist\/about-dr-glaser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Barry Glaser<\/a>, an orthodontist in Westchester County, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeens and adults may also be candidates for treatment, but results are best in younger patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to tell that to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@starlaarguijo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Starla Arguijo<\/a>, 36, who got her latest palate expander in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I would have gotten it done when I was much younger, because I\u2019ve spent my entire life hating my smile,\u201d the Texas mom confessed to The Post.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do palate expanders work?<\/h2>\n<p>Traditional palate expanders attach to the upper back molars with bands. A small screw mechanism connects the two halves of the metal device.<\/p>\n<p>The kid or parent is given a special key to slightly turn the screw each day, with each twist widening the appliance by about 0.25 millimeters.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Valentina demonstrates how to turn the device to widen it, which can be the trickiest part for some kids. <span class=\"credit\">Michael McWeeney<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m right there with her doing it, but [Valentina] wants to be independent and do it herself now, which gives me anxiety,\u201d Cabral admitted about the turns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes she rotates it the wrong way.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>As the palate widens, new bone tissue forms in the gap to stabilize the expansion.<\/p>\n<p>Palate expanders can be worn for several months, depending on the narrowness of the arch.<\/p>\n<p>After all the turns are made, there\u2019s usually a holding phase to let things settle. Patients might notice better teeth alignment, a wider smile and face shape and even improved breathing and sleep because the nasal passages expanded too.<\/p>\n<p>Connecticut mom Jessica Ziolko said her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DPjXkqbjkhW\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8-year-old daughter\u2019s teeth<\/a> are already less crowded since she got her palate expander in October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took photos before she got the palate expander, and then we took some recently and compared them side by side, and we\u2019ve definitely seen a shift in her teeth,\u201d Ziolko told The Post about her daughter Scarlett, who has a \u201creally high\u201d palate and an open bite \u2014 her upper and lower front teeth don\u2019t touch, even when she closes her mouth.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much does a palate expander cost?<\/h2>\n<p>The price varies based on the type of expander, the complexity of the case and insurance coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Ziolko, for one, shelled out $4,500 for Scarlett\u2019s expander and braces.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p>In Pennsylvania, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sencakorthodontics.com\/blog\/jaw-expander-cost-what-you-should-expect-to-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sencak Orthodontics<\/a> reports that the initial orthodontic consultation costs between $100 and $250, while the device is priced $1,000 to $3,000. Follow-up visits for adjustments and monitoring range from $50 to $150 a pop.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>An alternative \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.invisalign.africa\/ortho\/invisalign-palatal-expander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Invisalign Palatal Expander<\/a>, which launched in 2023 \u2014 can cost anywhere from $1,000 to over $6,000.<\/p>\n<p>It differs from the traditional appliances in that it is removable and does not feature screws or metal parts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Invisalign system uses a series of 3D-printed expanders,\u201d explained Glaser, an Invisalign provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients brush and floss, clean the device and insert it onto the posterior teeth,\u201d he added. \u201cThe trays are swapped according to the treatment plan, with no manual turning required.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are some downsides of palate expanders?<\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.valleyranchorthodontics.com\/blog\/orthodontic-expanders-commonly-asked-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experts say<\/a> that side effects of the expanders can include discomfort, pain, jaw aches and headaches, as well as speech difficulties, sinus pressure, a gap between front teeth and increased saliva.<\/p>\n<p>Arguijo has struggled as the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@starlaarguijo\/video\/7566049182998400286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wires press down on her tongue<\/a> \u2014 and she lamented that she sounds like she\u2019s \u201csick half the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p>And over in New Jersey, Valentina replaced the traditional expander she got in September 2024 with a removable one in July after \u201cchoking\u201d on some words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter is an actress, so it really affected her speech in the beginning, and even when she [learned] how to use it, there was a difference in her speech,\u201d Cabral explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had some big roles that she was up for,\u201d she added, \u201cand [the dentist] said, \u2018We can do the removable one.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Palate expanders often enhance the braces experience instead of substituting for them. <span class=\"credit\">Michael McWeeney<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It also changes eating habits, since hard, sticky, chewy and sugary foods can damage the device.<\/p>\n<p>Lottie Weaver\u2019s 9-year-old daughter, Kinlee, said goodbye to Starbursts, suckers and gum when she <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lottie..weaver\/video\/7506934168933223710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">got her expander in May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThings get stuck in it,\u201d the Arizona mom told The Post as she recalled the \u201chard\u201d adjustment. \u201cThe first week, she literally just ate rice and yogurt \u2026 and it was sore.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do palate expanders replace braces?<\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thebentistofficial\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Ben Winters<\/a>, a Texas-based dentist and orthodontist, said palate expanders are \u201cabout as permanent as a jaw surgery would be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet, they rarely fix smiles on their own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost universally, people will still undergo braces \u2014 if they already have a narrow jaw, there\u2019s probably other things going on: crowding, underbite, overbite, etc.,\u201d Winters, founder of the oral care company <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/somethingnicecompany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Something Nice<\/a>, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be rare to only do an expander and that\u2019s it, but in some mild cases where it perfectly relieves the crowding, I guess it\u2019s a possibility!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips for those considering palate expanders<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Speak up if there\u2019s discomfort. Arguijo said she changed expanders after \u201cthe roof of my mouth kept growing over\u201d the first one. You may have to experiment to find the right one.<\/li>\n<li>Do the prescribed turns. A big problem that experts see is patients doing more turns than needed, causing overexpansion, pain or tissue damage. The good news is that a professional can undo the turns.<\/li>\n<li>Keep it clean. Weaver recommends a water flosser to spray away the gunk. She also packs a disposable toothbrush and a collapsible cup in her daughter\u2019s backpack in case something gets caught in the expander at school.<\/li>\n<li>Educate yourself on the possibilities. Ziolko said her daughter not only needs the expander and braces, but also myofunctional therapy to help correct her mouth breathing and her tongue posture.
