Ex-Prince Andrew<\/a> is once again pulling the royal family into a mess they can\u2019t seem to escape.<\/p>\n A British historian is now warning that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor\u2019s ties<\/a> to convicted s– offender Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> are dragging the monarchy into what he calls \u201cthe most dangerous moment\u201d in its 1,150-year run.<\/p>\n \u201cI think they\u2019re in trouble,\u201d author Andrew Lownie<\/strong> said on \u201cThe Daily Beast Podcast. <\/a>\u201cPeople are asking wider questions beyond Andrew about how this was allowed to happen, why it wasn\u2019t dealt with earlier, and how he continues to be protected.\u201d<\/p>\n According to Lownie, the royals have switched into survival mode.<\/p>\n \u201cThe royals are now aware of that, and to save themselves, to save wider questions about royal privilege and accountability, they\u2019ve thrown Andrew to the wolves in effect,\u201d he told host Joanna Coles<\/a>.<\/p>\n He went on to float the idea that King Charles<\/a> \u2014 who he described as \u201cmuch more forgiving\u201d \u2014 may be quietly working behind the scenes to help his younger brother leave the U.K. altogether. Lownie pointed to Charles\u2019 private meeting last month with Bahrain\u2019s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa<\/strong>, noting the country has no extradition treaty with the U.K. or the U.S.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s all smoke and mirrors and window dressing,\u201d said Lownie, who recently explored Andrew and Sarah Ferguson<\/a>\u2019s long-standing ties to Epstein in his new book Entitled.<\/em><\/p>\n But Lownie warned the fallout won\u2019t stop with Andrew.<\/p>\n He suggested that “ruthless” Prince William<\/a> could ultimately put Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice<\/a>, 37, and Princess Eugenie<\/a>, 35, in a tough spot \u2014 hinting their own titles could be at risk if the situation continues to spiral.<\/p>\n Andrew\u2019s ex-wife \u2014 who is still living in royal accommodations \u2014 could add even more chaos, Lownie argued. He said she\u2019s a \u201creal worry\u201d for the palace because she may decide to go public with what she knows if she feels cornered.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is just the most extraordinary story to think of the British royal family sort of imploding like this,\u201d Coles said during the discussion. \u201cAnd the [late] queen\u2019s favorite son<\/a> being banished to the Middle East to avoid legal proceedings and his ex-wife threatening a tell-all.\u201d<\/p>\n Lownie added that the pressure is now coming from outside the palace walls, too.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople are asking much wider questions about the opaqueness of their finances, which they don\u2019t want to answer,\u201d he said, noting the public is \u201cfed up with coverups, with the protection elites.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThings are breaking up,\u201d he added, pointing to a new poll from the anti-monarchy group Republic that shows support for the monarchy sitting at just 46 percent. \u201cSo they do need to sort of regroup and rethink what they do.\u201d<\/p>\n As OK! <\/em>previously reported, William is already planning a major refresh of the institution as Andrew\u2019s scandals<\/a> linger and Charles navigates recent cancer treatment.<\/p>\n “Prince William is most determined to modernize the monarchy<\/a>, much of what we don\u2019t see front and center is actually rather critical in this molding of the monarchy\u2019s future image to ensure it remains relevant,” royal expert Hilary Fordwich<\/strong> told Fox News.<\/p>\n “Given his immense popularity and that of [wife] Kate Middleton<\/a> \u2013 we know she will play a vital role \u2013 particularly as their children grow and are launched,” she continued.<\/p>\n “We should expect her to become ever more influential behind the scenes, even with King Charles III as they have a rather wonderful rapport strengthened by their shared health crisis,” Fordwich added.<\/p>\n Read more at OK!<\/a><\/p>\n Get OK!’s biggest scoops and scandals delivered right to your inbox.
