She made her debut as a soloist with New Jersey\u2019s Plainfield Symphony Orchestra at age 10, and since then, she\u2019s gone on to win prizes at piano competitions around the world. <\/p>\n<p>She started sharing videos of her performances on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@TiffanyPoonpianist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her YouTube channel<\/a> during the pandemic, and in 2020, she founded <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.togetherwithclassical.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Together With Classical<\/a>, a nonprofit that empowers people to share their own experiences with classical music.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpr-injected-form wp-block-wpr-theme-gravity-form\">\n<div class=\"gf_browser_gecko gform_wrapper gravity-theme gform-theme--no-framework\" data-form-theme=\"gravity-theme\" data-form-index=\"0\" id=\"gform_wrapper_2\">\n<div class=\"gform_heading\">\n<h2 class=\"gform_title\">News with a little more humanity<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gform_description\">WPR\u2019s \u201cWisconsin Today\u201d newsletter keeps you connected to the state you love without feeling overwhelmed. No corporate filter.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Poon\u2019s new album explores French piano pieces that take their inspiration from the natural world, from the sounds of birds to the motion of water. <\/p>\n<p>I recently had the opportunity to ask Poon about her follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2024 album of Robert Schumann\u2019s music, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pentatonemusic.com\/product\/diaries-schumann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diaries<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pentatonemusic.com\/product\/nature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nature<\/a>\u201d is available now on the Pentatone label.<\/p>\n<p><em>The following interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jason Heilman: How did you decide on the theme for this new album?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tiffany Poon: <\/strong>I was struggling to find my next album concept and I felt artistically paralyzed for some weeks, so I went for a swim \u2026 Then I had an epiphany in the waters because my eyes kept gravitating towards a tree \u2026 So voil\u00e0! Nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JH:<\/strong> <strong>How did you approach programming it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TP:<\/strong> I searched for nature-themed piano repertoire and found out that a lot of it is French. I explored French art collections in New York, Philadelphia and Paris and I have the impression that the deep respect and admiration for nature is very unique to French culture. <\/p>\n<p>It permeates everywhere in Paris for example, from designs of Hausmann buildings to the rabbit mascot for the metro. So like (French composer Jean-Philippe) Rameau advocated, I followed my instincts to curate a musical journey through nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JH:<\/strong> <strong>Was there a favorite piece on this album that you knew you had to include?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TP:<\/strong> One of the first pieces that came to mind was (French composer Maurice) Ravel\u2019s \u201cJeux d\u2019eau,\u201d a beautiful piece I\u2019ve known since I was 13, listening to (Martha) Argerich\u2019s recording growing up. <\/p>\n<p>But honestly, I don\u2019t have favorites. The first time I heard it all the way through, it made me smile and I could picture myself playing it right away. <\/p>\n<p>Same with \u201cLe Coucou\u201d by (Louis-Claude) Daquin and \u201cAesop\u2019s Feast\u201d by (Charles-Valentin) Alkan \u2014\u00a0 I hope they bring the listeners some smiles from their charming silliness.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nouvelles suites de pi\u00e8ces de clavecin Suite in G Major, RCT 6: XII.
