But in Utah in 2023, a medley by the Nigerian singers <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/23\/arts\/music\/tems-born-in-the-wild.html\" title=\"\">Tems<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/05\/arts\/music\/burna-boy-twice-as-tall.html\" title=\"\">Burna Boy<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/rema-heis-calm-down-afrobeats-nigeria-1235293402\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Rema<\/a> at halftime of the N.B.A. All-Star Game showed that American sports leagues were embracing the genre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI was just so proud to see our own playing on that stage,\u201d said Masai Ujiri, then the president of the Toronto Raptors, who was raised in Nigeria and takes dance lessons to the music about once a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Afrobeats had been part of track and field and soccer culture by that point, but its influence on the sports world has only grown since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">This summer, Burna Boy\u2019s hit single \u201cDon\u2019t Let Me Drown\u201d was featured on the soundtrack of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/26\/movies\/f1-movie-review-brad-pitt.html\" title=\"\">the racing blockbuster \u201cF1: The Movie\u201d<\/a> and Tems performed at halftime at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/card\/2025\/07\/15\/arts\/music\/world-cup-halftime-doja-cat-tems-j-balvin\" title=\"\">an international soccer final<\/a>. Tyla, who is South African and incorporates Afrobeats into her music, has signed an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/about.nike.com\/en\/magazine\/exclusive-nike-interview-tyla\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">endorsement deal with Nike<\/a>. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/26\/world\/europe\/france-olympics-aya-nakamura.html\" title=\"\">Aya Nakamura<\/a>, a French Malian singer with Afrobeats influences, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/29\/world\/olympics\/olympic-ceremony-france-singer-aya-nakamura.html\" title=\"\">was part of the opening ceremony<\/a> of last year\u2019s Summer Olympics in Paris.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Music executives, athletes and artists are pointing to the Latin star <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/28\/arts\/music\/bad-bunny-super-bowl-halftime.html\" title=\"\">Bad Bunny\u2019s upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance<\/a> as a template that Afrobeats could follow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cThere just needs to be more familiarity and visibility and more great songs, more work<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">,\u201d <\/em>said<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>Tunji Balogun, the chief executive of Def Jam Recordings. \u201cIt\u2019s going take time. But I do think it\u2019ll happen eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Afrobeats is a 21st-century amalgamation of Nigerian and Ghanaian styles that is distinct from the jazz-, soul- and funk-influenced Afrobeat genre of the 1960s. It entered the American mainstream in the 2010s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Drake collaborated with the Nigerian artist Wizkid on the song \u201cOne Dance\u201d in 2016, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WcIcVapfqXw\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Selena Gomez<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FeMeopQqB6s\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Bieber<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/EDZ25anwgjc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Sheeran<\/a> have also been featured on Afrobeats songs. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?si=8gY5sGeOndwZEWRZ&amp;v=t-KBFFeK0jk&amp;feature=youtu.be\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Burna Boy performed at the Grammy Awards last year<\/a>, and releases by Burna Boy, Tems and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/11\/arts\/music\/davido-a-better-time.html\" title=\"\">Davido<\/a> have been commercial successes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cAll of these artists can sell out tours in America and tour the entire country \u2014 10 years ago that was damn near impossible,\u201d said Balogun, whose parents are Nigerian.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ebro Darden, an Apple Music radio host, said the current Afrobeats stars have been important ambassadors in an industry where top talent can be selective about public engagements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cThey\u2019ve done the shows, they\u2019ve done the interviews, they care and they don\u2019t take the spotlight for granted,\u201d Darden said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The inclusion of Afrobeats in the sports world aligns with the international ambitions of several American leagues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The All-Star Game halftime show was a direct result of the N.B.A.\u2019s having <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/14\/business\/nba-africa.html\" title=\"\">established a 12-team league in Africa<\/a> about two years earlier, said Carlton Myers, the senior vice president of live production and entertainment for the N.B.A. He said he had heard from colleagues who were on the ground about the excitement that locals demonstrated for the music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">\u201c<\/em>I was getting a lot of information about how prevalent it was over there and how it was coming our way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Afrobeats has been played in arenas during regular-season N.B.A. games, and some of the league\u2019s top stars are avid listeners. Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors guard, has said he is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@theshift_sports\/video\/7274374498650950954?_r=1&amp;_t=ZP-91sTvaaWeCN\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a fan of Burna Boy and Wizkid<\/a>; Davido performed at the wedding of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/30\/movies\/joel-embiid-africa-miniature-geant.html\" title=\"\">Joel Embiid, the Cameroonian center<\/a> who plays for the Philadelphia 76ers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The N.F.L., which successfully campaigned to add flag football to the 2028 Olympics, is also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/operations.nfl.com\/updates\/the-players\/nfl-africa-program-expands-to-nigeria\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">investing resources in Africa<\/a>, hosting fan events and camps for potential players in countries such as South Africa and Kenya.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Jesse Luketa, a linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams, balances his football career with rapping and creating Afrobeats music. His mother is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and he speaks English, French and Lingala, a language spoken in Central Africa. As demographics shift, he said, it is natural for Afrobeats to become more visible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cThe game is starting to grow, kids are getting the opportunity to showcase their abilities and change their circumstances, and it\u2019s a beautiful thing,\u201d Luketa said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Irene Agbontaen, a marketing executive for United Talent Agency, which represents Burna Boy and Tyla, said the appearance of Afrobeats at a Super Bowl was inevitable. She pointed out that despite the growing <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/22\/arts\/music\/bad-bunny-rosalia-latin-pop.html\" title=\"\">commercial power of Latin music<\/a>, that genre has had sparse representation on the Super Bowl stage.
