Ed Sheeran<\/a> has opened up about his songwriting process after his latest material sparked speculation about his marriage<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Last week, the four-time Grammy winner unveiled the deluxe edition of his latest album Play, featuring 14 brand new songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However, after scouring the lyrics of Ed\u2019s new tracks, many picked up on the fact that many of them appear to allude to difficulties in his marriage<\/a> to his wife of six years, Cherry Seaborn<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Speaking at a Spotify event, The Sun<\/a> reported that Ed told those in attendance: \u201cSometimes people listen to records today and assume that what that song is, [represent\u2019s the songwriter\u2019s] world 100 per cent at the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In fact, he insisted, his songs \u201cvery much\u201d represent \u201cheightened emotions\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou never write a song on a \u2018meh\u2019 day,\u201d the Lego House singer claimed. \u201cYou always write songs like, \u2018This is the most loving I\u2019ve ever felt, this is the happiest I\u2019ve ever felt, this is the angriest I\u2019ve ever felt\u2019. They\u2019re all like big extremities and that\u2019s what inspires the song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He continued: \u201cThat\u2019s where the song exists, and that\u2019s why people connect to the song, as people have these big feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI think the only time the songs will ever be created, for me at least, are in those moments of big extremes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On the new Play cut Problems, Ed sings: \u201c<\/span>Flowers in our garden are dying, when did the water run dry? Who can tell? But you want the truth, we\u2019re not fine, we don\u2019t need space, we need time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe got problems, and we don\u2019t know how to solve them,\u201d he continues on the chorus. \u201cIt gets worse when we\u2019re not talking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Elsewhere on the album, War Games has lyrics about \u201ct<\/span>earing out our hair again, we\u2019re stuck inside a war game\u201d and how \u201cevery day, we feel deflated, trying to roll with the changes, the reality of what we\u2019ve created\u201d, and on Regrets he laments: \u201cKids, they add stress, work ain\u2019t working the best, but that ain\u2019t the explanation why this love is a mess.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2015, Ed began dating Cherry, a former accountant who he\u2019d known since school.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The two tied the knot in 2019, and now have two children, five-year-old Lyra and three-year-old Jupiter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
