The project includes the creation of the<strong> Museum of Detroit Electronic Music (MODEM)<\/strong>, marking a major investment in the city\u2019s electronic heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Located on <strong>Detroit\u2019s East Side<\/strong>, the <strong>Albert Kahn-designed Packard Plant<\/strong> has stood largely abandoned since it ceased operations in 1958. In the 1990s, it became a key site for underground raves, hosting events like <strong>Richie Hawtin\u2019s Spastik<\/strong> warehouse parties and the legendary <strong>DJ Godfather vs. Gary Chandler<\/strong> battle. Over the years, the site has also featured in major productions, including<strong> Transformers, It Follows<\/strong>, and <strong>Eminem\u2019s<\/strong> 2009 <strong>\u2018Beautiful\u2019<\/strong> video. A <strong>Banksy<\/strong> mural discovered in 2015 was later auctioned for $137,500.<\/p>\n<p>The newly announced redevelopment focuses on the southern 28-acre section of the plant and will include housing, an indoor skatepark, recreational areas, and two acres of indoor and outdoor public space \u2014 with <strong>MODEM<\/strong> as a cultural centerpiece.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFive years ago, the <strong>Packard Plant<\/strong> was still standing as Detroit\u2019s most iconic ruin,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Mayor Mark Duggan.<\/strong> <em>\u201cIt took an incredible amount of work to gain title to the property and tear down everything that could not be saved in hopes for a day like this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Incoming mayor <strong>Mary Sheffield<\/strong> echoed the sentiment: <em>\u201cThis is how we honor our past while building our future \u2014 by preserving history, creating jobs, expanding housing, and investing in culture and community all at once.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Plans also include a 393,000 square foot, Class-A industrial building projected to generate 300 jobs.
