\u2018Wicked: For Good\u2019 is even more popular than the first, soaring to a $226 million global debut<\/b><\/a><\/p>\nSome of those nominations came at the expense of some high-profile studio films. \u201cWicked: For Good\u201d was nominated for five awards, including two nods for its songs and acting nominations for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. But it was overlooked for an award it was presumed to be in contention for: best comedy or musical.<\/p>\n
The nominees instead were \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d Yorgos Lanthimos’ \u201cBugonia,\u201d Josh Safdie’s \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d Park Chan-wook’s \u201cNo Other Choice\u201d (a Neon release) and a pair of Richard Linklater movies in \u201cBlue Moon\u201d and \u201cNouvelle Vague.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the drama category, Chlo\u00e9 Zhao’s \u201cHamnet\u201d scored six nominations, including nods for its stars, Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal. It was nominated for best film, drama, along with \u201cFrankenstein\u201d and three Neon titles: \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and \u201cIt Was Just an Accident.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jafar Panahi’s \u201cIt Was Just an Accident,\u201d the acclaimed Iranian revenge drama, was nominated for a total of four awards. At different times, Panahi has often been imprisoned, put under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Iran by the Islamic Republic while making films over the past two decades. Earlier this month, while traveling outside of Iran with the film, he was sentenced to a year in prison and a new two-year travel ban.<\/p>\n
Podcasters and A-listers mingle<\/b><\/p>\n
As the Globes continue to transition out of their scandal-plagued past, there’s one notable change this year. For the first time, the Globes are giving a best podcast trophy. The inaugural nominees are \u201cArmchair Expert With Dax Shepard,\u201d \u201cCall Her Daddy,\u201d \u201cGood Hang With Amy Poehler,\u201d \u201cThe Mel Robbins Podcast,\u201d \u201cSmartLess\u201d and NPR’s \u201cUp First.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many of those nominees aren’t exactly outsiders to Hollywood. But they’ll mingle with a wide array of stars that the Globes, long known for packing their red carpet with A-listers, were sure to nominate.<\/p>\n
Those include Timothee Chalamet, nominated for his performance in \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d Jennifer Lawrence (\u201cDie My Love\u201d), Julia Roberts (\u201cAfter the Hunt\u201d), Tessa Thompson (\u201cHedda\u201d), Jeremy Allen White (\u201cSpringsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere\u201d), Emma Stone (\u201cBugonia\u201d), Ethan Hawke (\u201cBlue Moon\u201d) and the two stars of \u201cThe Smashing Machine,\u201d Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.<\/p>\n
After a series of controversies for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that previously put on the ceremony, the Globes were sold in 2023 to Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions, a part of Penske Media. A new, larger voting body of more than 300 people now vote on the awards, which moved from NBC to CBS on a shorter, less expensive deal.<\/p>\n
Nikki Glaser is returning as host to the Jan. 11 Globes, airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. This past January, Glaser won good reviews for her first time emceeing the ceremony. Ratings were essentially unchanged, slightly dipping to 9.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen, from 9.4 million in 2024.<\/p>\n
Helen Mirren will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award in a separate prime-time special airing Jan. 8. Sarah Jessica Parker will be honored with the Carol Burnett Award.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
