Most musicians are in that category. I\u2019ve met many artists over the years that struggle day to day to feed their families while pursuing their music dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E6PW4Y2XCNBZDI4FQ6APXOEN44\">The legislation, which was first introduced in the U&gt;S. Senate on Jan. 30, would essentially require radio stations to pay artists royalties for playing their music over the airwaves. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2NT3G3G3E5GAVI7E23ASJVABXA\">Love explained that thousands of working performers \u2014 such as background singers, band members and studio musicians \u2014 are entitled to these royalties so that they can make a living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2HIJ7MYYSVBOXIVT6V3LMX4MQM\">\u201cThey depend on music performance income\/royalties earned via licenses, radio, streaming or other music distribution platforms to support their families,\u201d Love wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s the payment they are rightfully entitled to for the use of the \u2018product\u2019 they \u2018manufacture\u2019 here in America \u2014 music. After all, paying someone to use their property or IP is fundamental to our American values.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NRHZ5I5JBBCS3BN6H3BM5RAPJY\">The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/music-modernization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/music-modernization\/\">Music Modernization Act<\/a>, which Trump signed into law in 2018, updated copyright protections to ensure artists get paid fairly when listeners stream their songs online or via apps. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JDQV3XJC4NBUPNB2YUW44UJQGY\">While Love said the act \u201chas made a real difference in the lives of working music artists who were taken advantage of for far too long,\u201d the singer believes more can be done to protect American musicians, especially in the digital age. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FNNWUI6PHRAW5O2WIQESMA6JWY\">\u201cToday the wealthiest technology companies in the world take our music without permission or compensation to build their AI products. Giant radio conglomerates broadcast our music for free, making billions in advertising dollars each year, without ever compensating the performers for using their work,\u201d Love wrote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JPLIBQ767FDDDJQ5MZCDOM2OFA\">\u201cIt gets worse \u2014 because the U.S. doesn\u2019t pay performers for AM\/FM radio plays, other countries won\u2019t pay American artists for AM\/FM radio plays abroad,&#8221; the singer said, mentioning how an estimated $300 million earned by American artists \u201cis being held overseas.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2QGMAWPVYRDRVJLFVENGEF5ZKY\">He continued, \u201cWhile fair compensation for AM\/FM airplay is a crucial step forward, it\u2019s only one part of a much larger picture for working musicians. Long-serving performers continue to navigate outdated foreign copyright rules that limit their ability to regain control of their own recordings. Many older artists struggle with basic access to affordable healthcare. And now, with the rise of AI-generated voices and imitation tracks, creators face a new wave of unauthorized uses of their artistry. These issues don\u2019t compete with one another \u2014 they reflect the shared reality of people who dedicate their lives to making American culture what it is. Addressing all of them will take time, but updating outdated radio law is a concrete place to begin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EJWA6KUTOJA7XERUC3BTWKJCC4\">After it was first introduced, Love said he joined more than 300 artists signing a letter asking Congress to send the American Music Fairness Act to Trump\u2019s desk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MQXV2YPIMZD2FNHMG7FQK2EC4A\">He named several other performers who also signed the letter and backed the bill, including Jason Aldean, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/12\/country-icon-mending-relationship-with-daughter-celebrates-her-engagement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/12\/country-icon-mending-relationship-with-daughter-celebrates-her-engagement.html\">Billy Ray Cyrus<\/a>, the Village People, Lee Greenwood and Trace Adkins. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RMHXKISQ4JFYBABWIZN3JZGJ5E\">KISS bassist and vocalist <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/12\/rock-legends-death-at-74-stemmed-from-bad-decisions-bandmate-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/12\/rock-legends-death-at-74-stemmed-from-bad-decisions-bandmate-says.html\">Gene Simmons<\/a> also showed his support for the bill in an open letter to Congress, which was published by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/12\/04\/gene-simmons-kiss-radio-fairness-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/12\/04\/gene-simmons-kiss-radio-fairness-act\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> on Friday, Dec. 4. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SXSVZFO6DRAIXHOU4EDICCPL5Q\">Simmons, who testified before the Senate about the American Music Fairness Act, blamed the \u201cbroken radio business model\u201d for stunting artists\u2019 growth, including his own children who are both musicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"272TPPYDXBHY7BCNYMKQ32HJNA\">Simmons accused radio corporations such as iHeartRadio and Audacy of collecting billions of dollars in advertising revenue without paying artists for making money from playing their music. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OHSCPCKJE5HYNFYOTRCJAWC6JI\">He also mentioned how streaming services and apps \u2014 including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and TikTok \u2014 pay artists to use their material. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XSSTQGPQLZDQPHRM2X3V6QEVPQ\">Therefore, Simmons said the American Music Fairness Act \u201cwill close the radio loophole and finally compel these companies to pay performers for the music they use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PVCQVXFHMVEKXLI5XMVI3SXGOM\">\u201cThe legislation will protect small, independent broadcasters \u2014 those not owned by huge corporations \u2014 while generating hundreds of millions of dollars in new economic activity,&#8221; Simmons wrote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X2QNSORQ75AADBY2PWCXAYKQ7Y\">\u201cThat could make a real difference in the lives of artists who are still trying to make it in the music industry, as well as thousands of backup singers, musicians, sound engineers and others whose names you may not know, but whose efforts are essential for bringing an album to life,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey deserve to get paid fairly for the work they do. Under this bill, they will \u2014 because it would require broadcasters to pay performers for terrestrial radio play like they already do on the digital side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D3UXVMVBCFFGLGTOPOJEK2JRVY\">Given that Trump signed the Music Modernization Act into law, Simmons is confident that do the same with the American Music Fairness Act. Therefore, the rockstar is hoping his request motivates Congress to pass the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3AGHBLJIRZHD5EQHTW2DFPSHVI\">\u201cRepublicans and Democrats might not agree on much these days, but they should agree on this: Every American who works hard deserves to have that hard work rewarded with fair pay,\u201d Simmons wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s past time for Congress to fix this. After all, the public airwaves belong to the American people, not to the corporations who use them to make money.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QVEE7M3FTNAMLDSPYTJALJAIXQ\">Love accused Congress of taking too long to pass the bill. He wrote in his op-ed that \u201cThe House Judiciary Committee needs to hold a markup on this bill so that it can move another step closer to the Oval Office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TU5ZFAB2UJHFNJZTRGQEPDWDGQ\">\u201cU.S. law has not caught up with the rest of the world. American workers aren\u2019t being paid,\u201d Love wrote. \u201cThe good news is that President Trump can quickly address these pressing challenges and level the playing field for all American performers \u2014 including session musicians, background vocalists and band members \u2014 who have and continue to contribute their incredible talents to our Great American Songs.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6RD7A5L3UBGPRPKWTS543KKGEI\">The musician concluded with, \u201cEvery American who works hard deserves to have that work rewarded with fair pay. It\u2019s time to close the radio loophole that has affected music artists for far too long.
