Maddie & Tae have made the \u201cheartbreaking\u201d decision to go their separate ways after more than a decade together.<\/p>\n
The country music<\/a> duo, made up of Maddie Marlow Font and Tae Dye Kerr, first revealed their split to PEOPLE<\/a> on Monday, Dec. 8. <\/p>\n Kerr plans on pausing her career to focus on her family while Font is planning a solo career. Both women plan to remain good friends and stay in touch.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re leaving this so open-ended because, you know, we might make another record one day,\u201d Font, 30, told PEOPLE. \u201cWe might go on some tour dates one day. But just in this season, it doesn\u2019t feel aligned for us to do it together.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s been such a hard, hard \u2014 honestly, heartbreaking \u2014 decision,\u201d Kerr, also 30, added. \u201cThis was the only dream I\u2019ve ever had since I exited the womb. I had a very specific vision of creating music and singing. When we met at 15, that\u2019s what we set out to do, and we\u2019re both just so grateful that we\u2019ve had the journey that we\u2019ve had. This career has been everything we\u2019ve ever wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n The breakup is not immediate as Maddie & Tae still have shows scheduled<\/a> through March of next year. <\/p>\n \u201cThank you for all the love as we step into this new bittersweet chapter,\u201d the platinum-selling duo later posted on Instagram<\/a>. \u201cWe both feel overwhelmed with gratitude for what we\u2019ve built with y\u2019all the last 12 years. Thank you for making our wildest dreams come true and we hope you stay close by to watch us chase some new dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n Font and Kerry first met in 2010 through their vocal coach, who was based in Dallas, according to PEOPLE. They first performed under the name Sweet Aliana before moving to Nashville and changing names to Maddie & Tae. <\/p>\n The duo released their debut single \u201cGirl in a Country Song\u201d in 2014, which eventually topped the Country Airplay chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA<\/a>. Maddie & Tae\u2019s other notable hits are \u201dFly,” \u201cShut Up and Fish,\u201d \u201cSierra,\u201d \u201cFriends Don\u2019t\u201d and \u201cDie from a Broken Heart.\u201d <\/p>\n Maddie & Tae have released three albums \u2014 \u201cStart Here\u201d (2015), \u201cThe Way It Feels\u201d (2020) and \u201cLove & Light\u201d (2025) \u2014 and several EPs over the span of their career.<\/p>\n The duo won the CMA Award for Music Video of the Year for \u201cGirl in a Country Song\u201d in 2015 as well as a CMT Award for Duo\/Group Video of the Year in 2022. <\/p>\n
