Online talk around Taylor Swift<\/a>\u2019s \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl\u201d album in October was disrupted by a coordinated, \u201cnarrative manipulation\u201d effort that accused the singer of promoting Nazism<\/a> and MAGA<\/a> ideology, according to a new report<\/a> from the behavioral intelligence startup GUDEA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The report flagged narratives pushed by inauthentic accounts across a number of platforms, including one claiming that \u201cTaylor Swift is a Nazi,\u201d an accusation that served as a \u201ccatalyst for a secondary, authentic conversation\u201d comparing Swift to self-described Nazi and Hitler-loving rapper Ye<\/a> (formerly Kanye West).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Users who weren\u2019t engaging with conspiracy theories \u201cnevertheless entered the conversation in response to the fallout created by inauthentic users\u201d to defend the singer and to slam the \u201cirrationality\u201d of such a narrative, the report found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe pattern of inauthentic provocation [to] authentic user discourse is a hallmark of successful narrative manipulation,\u201d GUDEA\u2019s report reads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt demonstrates how small bursts of coordinated activity can reshape cultural perception by forcing mainstream audiences to respond to extremized framing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The report comes months after wild interpretations of Swift\u2019s lyrics and imagery bubbled up online, including posts that connected a lightning-bolt-like necklace in her merch store<\/a> to a Nazi SS symbol<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

GUDEA also found a \u201csignificant user overlap between accounts pushing the Swift \u2018Nazi\u2019 narrative\u201d and those part of a \u201cseparate astroturf campaign\u201d attacking Blake Lively, a friend of Swift who is involved in a sexual harassment lawsuit<\/a> against her \u201cIt Ends With Us\u201d co-star and director Justin Baldoni.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Following Swift\u2019s album release, she was accused of making racist swipes at her fianc\u00e9 Travis Kelce<\/a>\u2019s ex-girlfriend after using the word \u201csavage<\/a>\u201d on her song \u201cEldest Daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Some posts tried depicting her as a \u201ctrad wife\u201d to Kelce and claimed she promoted white supremacy with the lyrics \u201cgot the whole block looking like you<\/a>\u201d on her song \u201cWi$h Li$t,\u201d despite the line appearing to make a nod to her desire to start a family with her NFL star fianc\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Others accused her of embracing far-right ideology, despite her history of backing Democratic candidates \u2014 such as<\/a><\/span> former Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a> \u2014 over the years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Georgia Paul, GUDEA\u2019s head of customer success, speculated to Rolling Stone magazine<\/a> that the narrative-pushing efforts could serve as a test run for \u201cnefarious actors\u201d outside of the U.S.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201c[They may] have reasons to see, \u2018If I can move the fan base for Taylor Swift \u2014 an icon who is this political figure, in a way \u2014 does that mean I can do it in other places?\u2019\u201d Paul said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
