When Taylor Swift<\/strong><\/a> dropped The Life of a Showgirl<\/em>, she was hit with inflammatory accusations online \u2014 which new research is showing was a coordinated attack.<\/p>\n

Back in October, social media posts accused Swift, 35, of endorsing MAGA, trad-wife ideology and white supremacy. The attacks appeared to focus on word choices from her latest album<\/a> (the word \u201csavage\u201d on \u201cEldest Daughter\u201d was deemed racist) and symbols (a necklace listed on her website drew comparisons to Nazis because of the lighting bolt charms bearing resemblance to the party\u2019s bolt symbol.)<\/p>\n

Swifties went on to defend their idol, engaging with the theories via social media.<\/p>\n

GUDEA \u2014 a behavioral intelligence startup that tracks claims such as these when they go viral online \u2014 examined more than 24,000 posts and 18,000 accounts across 14 digital platforms from October 4 to October 18.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSeveral Taylor Swift fans are convinced that the pop star\u2019s Life of a Showgirl cover art subtly referenced Blake Lively amid their lingering drama. A handful of Swifties recently pointed out that the cover of the \u201cIt\u2019s Rapturous\u201d CD features Swift, 35, wearing a pink diamond bangle that looks like one Lively, 38, has previously [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The group is now reporting that 3.77 percent of accounts drove 28 percent of the conversation around Swift and The Life of a Showgirl<\/em> in that time frame \u2014 pointing to a cluster of accounts that spread inflammatory content about Swift. (Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> was the first to share the news on Wednesday, December 10.)<\/p>\n

The research showed that the content often initially appeared on forums like 4chan or KiwiFarms before making its way over to more mainstream social media platforms, where they were sustained by people challenging them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe false narrative that Taylor Swift was using Nazi symbolism did not remain confined to fringe conspiratorial spaces; it successfully pulled typical users into comparisons between Swift and Kanye West,\u201d the researchers wrote. \u201cThis demonstrates how a strategically seeded falsehood can convert into widespread authentic discourse, reshaping public perception even when most users do not believe the originating claim.\u201d<\/p>\n

GUDEA\u2019s head of customer success, Georgia Paul,<\/strong> claimed she suggested that the group investigate the online conversation surrounding Swift after having a \u201cgut feeling\u201d that there was something going on. Paul and her coworkers confirmed this idea and identified two spikes in misleading activity related to Swift.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTaylor Swift is one of the most-decorated musicians of all time \u2014 but her pop star reputation didn\u2019t come without a few controversies. Swift dropped her self-titled debut album in 2006, kickstarting her country career. Over her next eight albums, she began to branch out of her original genre and cross over into pop territory. [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The first occurred on October 6 and 7, with approximately 35 percent of the posts in GUDEA\u2019s data set generated by accounts that appeared to be bots. The second, which happened over October 13 and 14 (after Swift released a merch collection with the aforementioned necklace), had about 40 percent of posts shared by \u201cinauthentic accounts and conspiracist content\u201d that accounted for 73.9 percent of the conversation.<\/p>\n

\u200b\u200b\u201cThe internet is fake,\u201d Keith Presley<\/strong>, GUDEA\u2019s founder and CEO, partially joked, noting that 50 percent of the internet is made up of bots. \u201cThis is something that we\u2019ve seen escalate on our corporate side \u2014 this type of espionage, or working to damage someone\u2019s reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Presley and his team do not know the identity of the individual or group behind the attack, but did discover \u201ca significant user overlap between accounts pushing the Swift \u2018Nazi\u2019 narrative and those active in a separate astroturf campaign attacking Blake Lively<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reference to Lively, 38, relates to the actress\u2019 ongoing legal battle<\/a> with her It Ends With Us<\/em> costar and director Justin Baldoni<\/strong>, in which she alleged that his \u201cplan went well beyond standard crisis PR.\u201d In Lively\u2019s 2024 lawsuit, she alleged that a group had proposed a \u201ca practice known as \u2018astroturfing,\u2019 which has been defined as \u2018the practice of publishing opinions or comments on the internet, in the media, etc. that appear to come from ordinary members of the public but actually come from a particular company or political group.\u2019\u201d (After Lively\u2019s lawsuit accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment, he denied the allegations and fired back his own lawsuit in January. Baldoni\u2019s suit was dismissed in June. Lively and Baldoni\u2019s trial has been postponed<\/a> until May 2026.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJustin Baldoni\u2019s lawyer is speaking out again after Blake Lively filed a lawsuit accusing the It Ends With Us director and star of sexual harassment \u2014 and of launching a \u201csocial manipulation\u201d campaign against her to \u201cdestroy\u201d her reputation. \u201cTAG PR operated as any other crisis management firm would when hired by a client experiencing [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

GUDEA researchers wrote that the data \u201creveals a cross-event amplification network, one that disproportionately influences multiple celebrity-driven controversies and injects misinformation into otherwise organic conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Presley\u2019s perspective, the networks and strategies demonstrate a \u201csophistication\u201d in potentially damaging reputations via social media. Rolling Stone noted that Swift\u2019s attacks may be a test-run before these accounts pursue other avenues in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we put our doomsday hat on, I think we can see that reality,\u201d Paul said, before speculating \u201cthat there might be other nefarious actors, not U.S.-based, who have reasons to see, \u2018If I can move the fan base for Taylor Swift \u2014 an icon who is this political figure, in a way \u2014 does that mean I can do it in other places?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
