It would be damning with faint praise to say that \u201cElla McCay<\/a>\u201d is the best film that James L. Brooks<\/a> has directed in almost three decades, given that the last two films by the 87-year-old filmmaker were complete disasters. \u201cSpanglish<\/a>\u201d and \u201cHow Do You Know<\/a>\u201d were so clumsy and inauthentic that it\u2019s hard to imagine they came from the same brilliant mind behind \u201cBroadcast News<\/a>\u201d and \u201cTerms of Endearment<\/a>.\u201d \u201cElla McCay<\/a>\u201d is not without its charms, as there are intermittent moments of old-fashioned sentimentality and bracing honesty that show signs of promise.
