will be performed alongside &#8220;The Winter\u2019s Tale,&#8221; presented by SSC\u2019s student troupe, The Bardlings, in a weekend-long celebration of free, outdoor Shakespeare.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Southern Shakespeare Company has a long tradition of inviting notable performers lead its Festival productions, pairing accomplished artists with a passionate local ensemble. The goal is not simply recognition, but resonance \u2014 and in Ragsdale, the company has found an actor whose instincts and sensibilities seem uniquely suited to Prospero.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cFor me, the excitement is in exploring Prospero\u2019s many layers,\u201d Ragsdale said. \u201cWho wouldn\u2019t love to have their own island and be able to use magic as a tool to rule upon it? But Prospero, while a magician, is also quite mortal. He\u2019s thinking about what\u2019s next for himself and especially for his beloved daughter. It\u2019s not always clear what his motives are, and at times his methods seem at odds with his ends. Maybe he\u2019s not even sure of them himself. He has what many would fantasize to be a perfect life \u2014 seclusion on a tropical island, books to read, servants to attend him \u2014 yet he longs to return to his former life. I feel like we\u2019re all torn between our desire for our optimal inner private life and our calling toward our outer societal one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Tempest&#8221; is often read as Shakespeare\u2019s own farewell to the stage \u2014 a meditation on legacy, mastery, and letting go. For Ragsdale, it\u2019s also a return to his roots.<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t WAIT,\u201d Ragsdale said. His first professional acting job, at age 15, was in an outdoor drama in Louisiana. \u201cOutdoors under a dark sky, around the fire, is literally where our species\u2019 great stories and myths all began. It feels primal in a wonderful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That primal sense of story is part of why Southern Shakespeare\u2019s Festival has become a beloved community event, drawing thousands each year to watch a centuries-old play come alive in the open air.
