{"id":2195654,"date":"2025-12-11T23:04:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T23:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2195654"},"modified":"2025-12-11T23:04:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T23:04:17","slug":"director-convicted-of-scamming-11m-from-netflix-and-going-on-lavish-spending-spree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/director-convicted-of-scamming-11m-from-netflix-and-going-on-lavish-spending-spree\/","title":{"rendered":"Director convicted of scamming $11M from Netflix and going on lavish spending spree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yw3al001w27m9dfhvfo86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/18\/entertainment\/carl-erik-rinsch-swindling-netflix-arrested\">Hollywood director<\/a> was convicted Thursday on charges that he scammed Netflix out of $11 million for a show that never materialized, while he instead used the cash for lavish purchases that included several Rolls-Royces, a Ferrari and about $1 million in mattresses and luxury bedding.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yy7zm00093b60tnu2ee84@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Carl Erik Rinsch, best known for directing the film \u201c47 Ronin,\u201d was convicted of wire fraud, money laundering and other charges, according to court records and a spokesperson for federal prosecutors in New York.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yy7zm000a3b609bijwtds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a statement, Rinsch\u2019s attorney, Benjamin Zeman, said he thought the verdict was wrong and \u201ccould set a dangerous precedent for artists who become embroiled in contractual and creative disputes with their benefactors, in this case one of the largest media companies in the world, finding themselves indicted by the federal government for fraud.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yy7zm000b3b60h7ip6ciu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prosecutors said Netflix had initially paid Rinsch about $44 million for an unfinished sci-fi show called \u201cWhite Horse,\u201d and then sent over an another $11 million after he said he needed additional funding to wrap up the production.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yy7zm000c3b60lk0idzs4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But instead of putting the money toward the show, Rinsch steered the cash to a personal account where he made a series of failed investments, losing around half of the $11 million in a couple months, according to prosecutors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yy7zm000d3b60noaekyxp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He then put the remaining funds into the cryptocurrency market, netting some profit, though Rinsch then deposited the money into his own bank account.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yy7zm000e3b60fzltjwec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then came the lavish purchases, prosecutors said, with Rinsch buying five Rolls-Royces and one Ferrari, along with $652,000 on watches and clothes. He also bought two mattresses for about $638,000 and spent another $295,000 on luxury bedding and linens. In addition, he used some of the money to pay off about $1.8 million in credit card bills, prosecutors said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj1yy7zm000f3b608s3drl2r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rinsch never finished the show.
