For many years it was repeated annually on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/television\">TV,<\/a> and to this day it\u2019s a favorite holiday offering for universities, churches, community theaters and professional companies across the U.S. and internationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Now it\u2019s coming to New York\u2019s Lincoln Center Theater in a production that stars mezzo-soprano <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joyce-didonato-eden-olympia-5713904ab2e9bdb9ff110bf304de72f9\">Joyce DiDonato,<\/a> who normally displays her talents next door at the Metropolitan Opera House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAmahl\u201d opens Dec. 16 and runs through the holidays for 23 performances, The title role is played by 12-year-old Albert \u201cAJ\u201d Rhodes Jr., who did a stint on Broadway as the young Simba in \u201cThe Lion King.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For director Kenny Leon, \u201cAmahl\u201d combines all the elements one could want from a holiday entertainment \u2014 and, for young children, it has the added benefit of being relatively short.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt has everything great storytelling has,\u201d Leon said. \u201cIt has humor and laughter, it has drama, it has heart, it has dance, music, all packed together in less than an hour. That\u2019s a full evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For Joyce DiDonato, \u2018Amahl\u2019 is personal<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For DiDonato, portraying Amahl\u2019s mother is not just another job. It\u2019s an emotional connection to a deeply personal memory that dates back to her childhood in Kansas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt really is my favorite opera,\u201d DiDonato said. \u201cFrom as early as I can remember my father would pull out the original LP recording and play it Christmas morning. To this day, Christmas is not complete without that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A couple of years ago she told Peter Gelb, the Met\u2019s general manager, that she would love to sing the role of Amahl\u2019s mother. But the cavernous, 3,800-seat opera house didn\u2019t seem the right place for a small-scale work that runs less than an hour, is scored for a chamber orchestra, and has a cast of just six soloists, two dancers and a small chorus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cGelb rightly noted it\u2019s too intimate a piece for the Met,\u201d DiDonato said. \u201cBut he worked with me on it quite closely to find the right spot for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That turned out to be the Mitzi Newhouse, a 300-seat house that is part of Lincoln Center Theater, where the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lincoln-center-ragtime-4f44f7c418c7643e8a572d66652481f3\">new artistic director, Lear deBessonet,<\/a> is eager to present family-friendly programming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cInvesting in young people and families is literally investing in the future,\u201d deBessonet said. \u201cAnd there\u2019s no substitute for young people encountering the arts while they\u2019re at those developmental ages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">How Menotti was inspired to compose \u2018Amahl\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Menotti, who wrote both the music and libretto for \u201cAmahl,\u201d had composed a number of successful operas, including \u201cThe Consul\u201d and \u201cThe Medium,\u201d when NBC commissioned him for the Christmas broadcast. But, as he recalled at the time, he was struggling to find a story as the deadline approached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Then a chance encounter with Hieronymus Bosch\u2019s \u201cThe Adoration of the Magi\u201d at the Metropolitan Museum of Art unlocked memories of his childhood in Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The title character in \u201cAmahl\u201d is a disabled child who lives in poverty with his mother. When the three Wise Men stop by on their way to present gifts to the baby Jesus, Amahl offers them his crutch in case the infant might need it. Instantly, he is able to walk without it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s a story of selflessness and giving from the heart,\u201d DiDonato said. \u201cHow important is that in today\u2019s world? The important-est.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Once Menotti had his plot, he rushed to complete the music and entrusted the orchestration to his partner, composer Samuel Barber. The Lincoln Center production uses a version scored for two pianos, an alternative authorized by Menotti.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The two-piano accompaniment had been used successfully in an earlier opera performed at the Mitzi Newhouse, \u201cIntimate Apparel,\u201d a co-commission with the Met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe wonderful discovery of that show was that the sound created by two pianos and voices in that space was incredibly powerful, and you didn\u2019t really need something else,\u201d deBessonet said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">More family programming planned for Lincoln Center<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Though this is the theater\u2019s first family offering, deBessonet is determined it won\u2019t be the last. Repeating \u201cAmahl\u201d in future years is one possibility, the way two other Lincoln Center institutions have annual holiday offerings: \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d at the New York City Ballet and an abridged version of Mozart\u2019s \u201cThe Magic Flute\u201d at the Met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But deBessonet also sees part of her mission as commissioning new works for the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019m inspired by the story of how George Balanchine\u2019s \u2018Nutcracker\u2019 came about,\u201d she said. \u201cAsking an artist at the very height of his craft to put that in the service of a work that would be highly engaging for children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOne of the opportunities we have is to add to the canon of work available for families.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2025 The Associated Press.
