A lot of people directly pay their streaming services. So a lot of times, they don\u2019t notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Dan Ives, Global Head of Tech Research at Wedbush Securities, \u201cwe are seeing an arms race take place in the streaming battle.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cNetflix has continued to raise prices as the churn from increases has been negligible with consumers given Netflix is the hearts and lungs of consumer content on a daily basis,\u201d he continued. \u201cContent is king, and Netflix is at the top of the mountain.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Adam Scott in \u201cSeverance\u201d on AppleTV+.  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Apple TV\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupo told The Post that streamers justify price hikes for reasons such as \u201crising production costs,\u201d since they spend billions of dollars on original programming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shows like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/07\/entertainment\/severance-season-2-review-weirder-and-wilder\/\">\u201cSeverance,<\/a>\u201d \u201cHouse of the Dragon,\u201d and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/26\/entertainment\/millie-bobby-brown-hated-stranger-things-season-5-costume-are-you-sure\/\">\u201cStranger Things\u201d<\/a> aren\u2019t cheap to make.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also cited expensive sports packages, such as the ESPN package hiking up Disney\u2019s prices, and the fact that \u201cNetflix is a publicly traded company,\u201d which gives it added pressure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kim Kardashian in \u201cAll\u2019s Fair\u201d on Hulu.  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Hulu\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But, as more viewers spot the increase \u2013 and the quality of the TV shows don\u2019t reflect the price hikes \u2013 \u201cthere will be a breaking point where people no longer invest in streaming services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCable hit that bubble a few years ago. People were cutting cable, and going to streaming. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s that far off [that people flee streaming]. It\u2019s feeling like cable all over again.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at the price trends of the major players.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Diego Luna in \u201cAndor\u201d on Disney+.  <span class=\"credit\">Des Willie \/Lucasfilm Ltd.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Disney+<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Disney\u2019s streamer made its debut in Nov. 2019. When it launched, it cost $6.99 per month. It also had no ads. Its first price hike was in 2022, when the tier with ads became $7.99 a month and ad-free increased to $10.99 per month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/23\/media\/disney-hiking-disney-prices-again-despite-boycotts-sparked-by-jimmy-kimmel-suspension\/\">recently in the fall, the prices hiked<\/a> to $11.99 a month for basic, with ads, and $18.99 for the premium tier without ads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to mention, bundled with Hulu, with ads, it\u2019s $12.99 a month. Their current most expensive plan is $44.99 per month, which includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN unlimited, with no ads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kim Kardashian in \u201cAll\u2019s Fair\u201d on Hulu. <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Hulu\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hulu<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hulu launched in 2007, but its current subscription form launched in 2010. At the time, it was $8 a month with ads, it\u2019s now $11.99 per month with ads and $18.99 for premium. The premium tier with no ads is currently $18.99.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Hulu launched its live TV tier, which was $39.99 per month, at the time. In 2019, it became $44.99 a month with ads, and $50.99 with no ads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, live TV with ads became $64.99 a month, and with no ads, it became $70.99 a month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the Disney merger, in 2021, Hulu increased their live TV prices to reflect a bundle with ESPN and Disney+, $69.99 with ads, and $75.99 with no ads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today, Hulu\u2019s live TV tier is $88.99 and its priciest tier is $99.99 (including Hulu with no ads, live TV, Disney+ with no ads, and ESPN select with ads).\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Patrick Schwarzenegger in HBO\u2019s \u201cThe White Lotus.\u201d   <span class=\"credit\">Fabio Lovino\/HBO<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HBO Max\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Currently, HBO Max is $10.99 for basic with ads, $18.49 for standard, and $22.99 for premium. <\/p>\n<p>When it launched in 2020, the ad tier cost $9.99 per month, and the standard tier was $14.99 per month. The first price hike happened in 2023, raising the standard tier to $15.99. <\/p>\n<p>Then, in 2024 (when the platform also briefly made an ill-advised <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/14\/media\/warner-bros-discovery-revives-hbo-max-branding-in-bid-for-more-subscribers\/\">temporary attempt <\/a>to get rid of the \u201cHBO\u201d and simply became \u201cMax\u201d), it hiked the price of the ad-free tier from $15.99 to $16.99 per month. <\/p>\n<p>Oct. 2025 marked its third price increase in three consecutive years, with the \u201cstandard\u201d tier rising to its current $18.49 per month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher in \u201cReacher\u201d on Prime Video.  <span class=\"credit\">Jasper Savage\/Prime<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prime Video\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 2016, Amazon\u2019s streaming arm launched for $8.99 a month. That apparently wasn\u2019t going to keep the lights on for the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/11\/first-look-at-amazons-billion-dollar-lord-of-the-rings-series\/\"> billion dollar \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d show.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Currently, it costs $14.99 per month (as part of Amazon Prime membership). In 2024, the streamer introduced ads \u2013 or paying an extra $2 per month for an add free tier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, you can still get it standalone (sans Amazon Prime membership) for $8.99.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>David Harbour as Hopper and Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven on Netflix\u2019s \u201cStranger Things.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Netflix\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Netflix\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Currently, a standard Netflix plan is $17.99 per month, and premium is $24.49 per month. There\u2019s still a\u00a0 standard tier with ads that\u2019s $7.99 per month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Netflix first launched its streaming service in 2007, but 2011 is really when Netflix\u2019s current incarnation started. A standard plan was $7.99. In 2013, a standard plan had the same price but it introduced the premium plan, which was $11.99 per month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, it introduced the concept of the standard plan ($7.99 a month) basic plan ($8.99 a month) and premium plan ($11.99). Prices hiked steadily through the years \u2013 in 2016, standard became $9.99.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By 2019, basic was $8.99, standard was $12.99 and premium was $15.99. Currently, it costs $12.99 per month, or $19.95 via Apple One, which bundles it with five other Apple services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the time that it launched in 2019, it was $4.99 a month. Its hiked its prices three times since then. The premium tier (that still had ads) was $4.99 a month. An additional ad-free premium tier was $9.99.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0 2023, the first prince hike involved axing the free tier. At the time of its 2021 launch in its current form, the ad version was $4.99 a month, while the premium version was $9.99 a month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the ad tier became $5.99 a month, while the premium tier got bundled with Showtime and became $11.99 a month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, it got bumped up to $7.99 for the ads tier and $12.99 for the premium tier, and remains that price today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kevin Costner in \u201cYellowstone\u201d on Paramount+.  <span class=\"credit\">Paramount Network\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Julie Clark, the SVP of Media and Entertainment at TransUnion, told the Post via email, \u201cPrice hikes are rarely welcomed, but often tolerated when the content and experience continue to deliver value.
