It is surprising, on a royal engagement nowadays, if someone doesn\u2019t try to hug the King.<\/p>\n

In a few short years, the monarch \u2013 sovereign, head of state, head of Commonwealth and defender of faith \u2013 has gone from untouchable \u201cquasi-deity\u201d in the public imagination to almost one of us<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

King Charles III, who was diagnosed with cancer<\/a> nearly two years ago and has been enduring weekly treatment ever since, has become more human than any king or queen before him and changed the Crown forever.<\/p>\n

His message, filmed two weeks ago, was long and detailed. He urged people to take up screening for early detection, gave \u201cmost heartfelt thanks\u201d to those caring for cancer patients, and asked for Christmas prayers for those still in the trenches of treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The language was modern \u2013 his \u201ccancer journey\u201d<\/a> \u2013 and clear: people think tests are \u201cfrightening, embarrassing or uncomfortable\u201d, he said, but are later always \u201cglad they took part\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The address, which was trailed with a casual snippet of film showing him sitting down and getting comfortable in front of the camera, was filmed for Channel 4, where anti-monarchy sentiment stretches to an \u201calternative Christmas speech\u201d every year.<\/p>\n

His message was paternal, delivered as if a concerned father or grandfather was trying to convince a hesitant relative.<\/p>\n
