Princess Alexandra has never made an announcement about stepping
\nback from public life. Yet a quiet debate has emerged among royal
\nwatchers over whether the Queen\u2019s cousin \u2013 one of the last working
\nrepresentatives of her generation \u2013 has, in all but name, retired
\nfrom royal duties.<\/p>\n


\nThe discussion was prompted this week by a rare appearance
\nalongside Queen Camilla<\/a> at a service of thanksgiving at the
\nChapel Royal, St James\u2019s Palace. Listed in the Court Circular, the
\nengagement served as a reminder that Princess Alexandra, who will
\nturn 89 on Christmas Day, remains officially a working member of
\nthe Royal Family \u2013 even if her public role has diminished.<\/p>\n

Responding to a post on social media by the Canadian royal
\nwriter and historian Patricia Treble, royal correspondent Richard
\nPalmer observed that Alexandra appeared to have been omitted
\nfrom her list<\/a> of those carrying out official duties on behalf
\nof the Crown.<\/p>\n

Treble had identified ten \u201cworking\u201d royals \u2013 King Charles, Queen
\nCamilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of
\nEdinburgh, the Princess Royal, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester
\nand the Duke of Kent \u2013 who between them have undertaken more than
\n2,400 engagements this year. Princess Alexandra did not feature. \u201cI
\nthink you\u2019ve stopped counting Princess Alexandra,\u201d Palmer noted,
\nadding that she had never formally announced her retirement.<\/p>\n

Treble agreed, explaining that the Princess had been moved into
\nthe \u201cretired\u201d category of her own records after carrying out only a
\nhandful of engagements since the coronation. \u201cBased on that
\ntrajectory, I shifted her to the \u2018retired\u2019 section of my
\nspreadsheets,\u201d she wrote, while acknowledging that no such
\ndesignation has been made by the Palace.<\/p>\n

\ninto her eighties. In 2018 she carried out 67 engagements, despite

\nmarkedly after the Covid pandemic, reflecting both advancing age
\nand changing priorities within the monarchy. There were a round a
\ndozen engagements in 2020,doubling to over 30 in both 2021 and in
\n2022.<\/p>\n

Then came a steep decline. Just three engagements were recorded
\nin 2023, one in 2024, and two so far this year \u2013
\nincluding this week\u2019s service at St James\u2019s Palace.<\/a> The
\ntrajectory has fuelled speculation that Alexandra has effectively
\nstepped back, even if protocol still places her among the King\u2019s
\nworking relatives.<\/p>\n

Those close to the institution note that the term \u201cworking
\nroyal\u201d is not a legal designation but a practical one, shaped by
\nhealth, availability and the needs of the Crown. Princess
\nAlexandra\u2019s continued inclusion in the Court Circular, however
\ninfrequent, suggests that she remains willing to serve when able
\nand asked. Her recent appearance with Queen Camilla \u2013 discreet,
\ndignified and unpublicised by official photographs \u2013 fits that
\npattern.<\/p>\n

Born in 1936, Princess Alexandra is a granddaughter of George V
\nand has spent seven decades representing the monarchy. She was a
\ntrusted lieutenant of Elizabeth II, particularly during the 1960s
\nand 1970s, and remained an active presence well into later life.
\nEven as the royal household has slimmed down, her service has been
\nregarded with particular affection, emblematic of a generation
