{"id":2197580,"date":"2025-12-13T10:55:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T10:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2197580"},"modified":"2025-12-13T10:55:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T10:55:13","slug":"how-frank-gehrys-new-world-center-changed-the-face-of-miami-beach-and-classical-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/how-frank-gehrys-new-world-center-changed-the-face-of-miami-beach-and-classical-music\/","title":{"rendered":"How Frank Gehry&#8217;s New World Center changed the face of Miami Beach \u2014 and classical music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>With the death of 96-year-old Frank Gehry last week, America lost one of its most innovative and visionary architects.<\/p>\n<p>One of his designs is credited with transforming Miami Beach&#8217;s architectural \u2014 and musical \u2014 landscape. <\/p>\n<p>The Gehry-designed New World Center sits just a stones-throw away from the old Lincoln Theatre, where the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nws.edu\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">New World Symphony<\/a> was previously based. <\/p>\n<p>The orchestral academy was co-founded in 1987 by Gehry&#8217;s long-time friend, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>During the New World Center&#8217;s grand opening celebration in January of 2011, Tilson Thomas told WLRN that he wanted to give the Symphony&#8217;s gifted young musicians \u2014 called Fellows \u2014 a state-of-the-art training facility.<\/p>\n<p>But he also wanted the general public to experience classical music in a new kind of space.<\/p>\n<p><b>READ MORE:<\/b> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wlrn.org\/npr-breaking-news\/2025-12-08\/remembering-the-iconic-designs-of-architect-frank-gehry\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Remembering the iconic designs of architect Frank Gehry<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the idea of the openness of the building is very much a part of his [Gehry&#8217;s] feeling about Miami,&#8221; said Tilson Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s so much natural light in this building. And the light is changing all the time, and as the light changes, our perspective on all the shapes in the building changes. It&#8217;s <i>living<\/i>, because it&#8217;s nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But artificial light also has its place at the New World Center \u2014 chiefly on the huge exterior projection wall, where audiences in the adjacent park can watch free live WALLCAST\u00ae Concerts of what&#8217;s happening inside. <\/p>\n<p>When it opened, a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/27\/arts\/music\/27open.html\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> music critic wrote that the New World Center had the potential to be a &#8220;game-changer&#8221; in the world of classical music.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement mourning Gehry&#8217;s passing, New World Symphony President and CEO Howard Herring wrote:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Fellows are chosen for their artistic excellence and independent thinking. Frank Gehry\u2019s design inspires them every day. Their creative spirits will be informed by the environment he designed for them.
