Abraham Quintanilla Jr.<\/a>, father of late Tejano music legend Selena Quintanilla<\/a>, has died. He was 86.<\/p>\n Quintanilla\u2019s death was announced Saturday by his son, Abraham \u201cA.B.\u201d Quintanilla III., via Instagram<\/a>. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s with a heavy heart to let you guys know that my Dad passed away today,\u201d the post read.<\/p>\n A cause of death has yet to be reported.<\/p>\n Quintanilla Jr. gained fame as a music producer, backing his daughter Selena\u2019s career which popularized Tejano (Tex-Mex) music before her murder in 1995<\/a>.<\/p>\n The late superstar\u2019s father, born in Corpus Christi, Texas, was a second generation Mexican American.<\/p>\n Quintanilla Jr. married Marcella Samora in 1963 and the couple had three children: Abraham (b. 1963), Suzette (b. 1967) and Selena (b. 1971).<\/p>\n The father taught his children how to play music from a young age so that they could perform together. He spent countless hours teaching Selena, the group\u2019s vocalist, how to sing in Spanish. <\/p>\n The group, Selena y Los DinoS, began performing together in the early \u201880s and rose to fame later in that decade. Selena\u2019s 1994 album, \u201cAmor Prohibido,\u201d went multiplatinum just a year before she was murdered by a former president of her fan club in Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n Quintanilla Jr. vowed to carry on Selena\u2019s legacy following her death. He executive produced the 1997 film \u201cSelena,\u201d where Edward James Olmos portrays him. He was also featured in the Netflix documentary \u201cSelena y Los Dinos; A Family\u2019s Legacy<\/a>,\u201d which released in October.<\/p>\n He is survived by his wife, <\/mark>Marcella, children Abraham III and Suzette, as well as his grandchildren<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
