Fresh off its Regional Theatre Tony Award win, the nation\u2019s oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre has unveiled its 108th season\u2014a lineup that Artistic Director and Executive Producer Mike Isaacson said is built on joy, spectacle, and community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt opened on Broadway in 2002 and it\u2019s what I would call a modern classic,\u201d Isaacson said of \u201cHairspray,\u201d which will kick off the season. \u201cIt is loved by a generation of musical theater goers and it has gone out into the world. <em>Hairspray<\/em> gives us the ability to be spectacular on stage and do that Muny thing we know we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The season, announced Dec. 1 at an invitation-only event in The Muny\u2019s Emerson Studio and livestreamed worldwide, features seven productions: \u201cHairspray,\u201d \u201cShrek The Musical,\u201d \u201cRodgers &amp; Hammerstein\u2019s South Pacific<em>,\u201d<\/em> \u201cDisney\u2019s Newsies,\u201d \u201cMeet Me in St. Louis\u201d and two Muny premieres\u2014 \u201cAin\u2019t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations\u201d and \u201cSomething Rotten!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Muny President &amp; CEO Kwofe Coleman said the theme of joy runs throughout the lineup. \u201c \u2018Hairspray\u2019 kicks it off, but there is a lot of excitement and happiness to come in this season,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Season tickets are now on sale for the Muny\u2019s 108th season, which was announced at an invite-only event that was livestreamed from their Emerson Studio. Among the seven shows is the Muny premiere of \u2018Ain\u2019t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations,\u2019 which plays July 27 \u2013 August 2. <br \/><span class=\"image-credit\"><span class=\"credit-label-wrapper\">Credit:<\/span> Courtesy photo<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Isaacson described \u201cNewsies\u201d as \u201can underdog story, a powerful American story, the David and Goliath story\u2014everything we love in a hero\u2019s journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The premiere of \u201cAin\u2019t Too Proud\u201d is expected to be a highlight. \u201cThese guys had 42 top ten hits and 15 number one hits,\u201d Isaacson said of The Temptations. \u201cBut they started at the bottom of the list at Motown and had to keep fighting for a place and for their story. The show is thrilling, and the song catalog is unbelievable.\u201d Coleman admitted it\u2019s his personal favorite of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not supposed to have a favorite show,\u201d Coleman said. \u201cI say this every year, and every year I have a favorite show. This year, this is my favorite show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Muny will also debut \u201cSomething Rotten!\u201d\u2014a satirical romp that imagines Shakespeare\u2019s rivals inventing the musical. Isaacson said the full season offers \u201ca true adventure,\u201d adding, \u201cIf you take the whole journey, it adds up to something really beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Coleman emphasized the community aspect of the theatre. \u201cOne of the proudest parts of being stewards of this place is that we are a place where community builds itself,\u201d he said. \u201cWe hope this season invites you to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Current Muny subscribers will receive details about how to renew season tickets; the deadline is Jan. 12.
