Jerry O\u2019Connell<\/strong><\/a> honored late Stand by Me<\/em> director Rob Reiner<\/strong><\/a> with a powerful tribute hours after news broke of the Hollywood icon\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Appearing on the Monday, December 15, episode of CBS Mornings<\/em><\/a>, the 51-year-old actor admitted he was still in \u201cshock\u201d after learning Reiner, 78, and wife Michele Singer Reiner<\/strong> were killed in their Los Angeles home<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, I don\u2019t mean this as any offense to my parents who are still with us \u2026 [but] Rob was like a father to me,\u201d O\u2019Connell said. \u201cIt\u2019s just surreal.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connell noted that it was \u201creally shocking\u201d how information about the couple\u2019s deaths \u201csort of trickled out\u201d on Sunday, December 14. TMZ initially reported that two people \u2014 a man and a woman \u2014 were found dead at Rob and Michele\u2019s address. The victims\u2019 identities were revealed at first, but their ages matched those of Rob and Michele.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHollywood is mourning the loss of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The couple were found dead inside their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on Sunday, December 14, with TMZ reporting that Rob, 78, and Michele \u201csuffered lacerations consistent with a knife.\u201d Rob and Michele\u2019s family broke their silence late Sunday [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A spokesperson for the family later confirmed their \u201csudden\u201d deaths<\/a> in a statement to Variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Multiple outlets reported that the pair\u2019s son Nick Reiner<\/strong><\/a> was a person of interest in the case, with a source telling Us Weekly<\/em> there was speculation about a family member\u2019s role in Rob and Michele\u2019s deaths. The Los Angeles Police Department Parker City Jail told Us<\/em> on Monday that Nick is in custody. His bail is set at $4 million.<\/p>\n

While reflecting on Rob\u2019s legacy on the CBS morning show, O\u2019Connell looked back on filming the 1986 movie Stand by Me<\/em>, which also starred Wil Wheaton<\/strong>, River Phoenix<\/strong> and Corey Feldman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI worked with [Rob] when I was 11, and at that point in my life, you know, I wasn\u2019t getting into trouble criminally, but I was always getting in trouble for speaking out loud in class and not being able to keep my mouth shut. My mother would always say, \u2018Sit on your hands and shut up.\u2019 \u2026 And I got to that set of Stand by Me<\/em> and I ad-libbed a scene one day early on in shooting and he was like, \u2018Cut! Jerry!\u2019 And I thought, \u2018Oh boy, here we go. Why didn\u2019t I sit on my hands and shut up?’\u201d O\u2019Connell recalled. \u201cAnd he went, \u2018Hey, Jerry, keep going, man. That\u2019s what I\u2019m talking about right there. Go, more.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor summed up Rob\u2019s impact on his life with one simple message. \u201cI\u2019m not making a joke, I know my house is dark, [but] everything I have is because of Rob Reiner. \u2026 It\u2019s just a sad, shocking day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
