\u201cIT: Welcome to Derry\u201d<\/a> co-creator Andy Muschietti is putting a fan theory to rest that has had some social media users buzzing. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If you\u2019ve been tuning into the HBO series, which is a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 \u201cIt\u201d films, you know that the show has seamlessly weaved together elements from Stephen King\u2019s multiverse with nods and connections to the horror icon\u2019s \u201cDark Tower\u201d and \u201cThe Shining\u201d universes. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The show\u2019s final episode titled \u201cWinter Fire\u201d that aired Sunday showed an eerie fog, onset by villain Pennywise, that enveloped the entire town of Derry, Maine, creating the perfect shroud for the ancient entity to capture Derry\u2019s entire high school student body. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The fog\u2019s presence led fans to <\/span>speculate<\/span><\/a> that the hazy scenery could be a <\/span>possible connection<\/span><\/a> to another one of King\u2019s famous horror works: \u201cThe Mist.\u201d King\u2019s 1980 novella \u201cThe Mist\u201d was famously adapted into a film of the same name in 2007 starring Thomas Jane, as well as the 2017 Spike TV series starring Morgan Spector.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

King\u2019s \u201cThe Mist\u201d novella centers around a group of people trapped in a Maine supermarket as a mysterious, creature-filled fog engulfs their town. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But according to Muschietti, Derry has nothing to do with \u201cThe Mist\u201d whatsoever. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThere is no connection to \u2018The Mist,\u2019\u201d Muschietti told Entertainment Weekly<\/a> in a story that was published Sunday. \u201cI\u2019m sorry to disappoint everyone with this.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Explaining that fog has \u201cits own logic,\u201d Muschietti continued, \u201cYou see it in episode 4 at the end when Taniel [Joshua Odjick] is telling the story and we see how the asteroid hits the Earth. After the explosion, we see the Deadlights are basically surrounded by this smokey fog that trails back.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The filmmaker added, \u201cWe decided to make that the language of It\u2019s expansion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Muschietti went on to tell EW that he used the fog in \u201cIT: Welcome to Derry\u201d to \u201cconvey visually\u201d just how expansive the entity can get. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for the indigenous community in the 1600s, It would have expanded across the world, but It\u2019s caged,\u201d he noted. \u201cNow that the pillars are lifted and the cage is open, I wanted to convey visually that force of super nature is expanding out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane chimed in to further break down why there couldn\u2019t be a connection between \u201cThe Mist\u201d and \u201cIT: Welcome to Derry.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNot to get too nerdy, but for that to be \u2018The Mist,\u2019 there would\u2019ve had to have been a portal opened up into Todash Darkness, specifically,\u201d he said, referencing the name of the deadly void between universes that\u2019s bustling with monsters and acted as a passageway for the creatures to attack Earth in the novel. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Elsewhere in the interview, Kane explained that the fog in \u201cIT: Welcome to Derry\u201d is a direct call back to the final scene in King\u2019s \u201cIt\u201d novel, in which a flash flood occurs when the Loser\u2019s Club duke it out with Pennywise for one final time. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt really is a direct consequence of that fight that\u2019s going on, and the psychic and spiritual power that the being has and its fear and its anger,\u201d he explained. \u201cThat creates these very specific conditions in Derry. You can parallel that here because there is a great, emotional thing happening for the creature, realizing that the lane is open for it to get out into the wider world.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
