Jerry Seinfeld<\/a> on Monday thanked Rob Reiner<\/a> for preventing the quick cancellation of \u201cSeinfeld<\/a>\u201d (1989-98), the sitcom that skyrocketed the comedian to fame.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In an Instagram tribute<\/a> to the iconic director and actor after he and his wife, Michele, were found dead in their home, Seinfeld shared a photo with Reiner and his father, Carl Reiner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cNext to [\u201cSeinfeld\u201d co-creator] Larry David and [talent manager] George Shapiro, Rob Reiner had the biggest influence on my career,\u201d Seinfeld wrote. \u201cOur show would have never happened without him. He saw something no one else could. When nobody at the network liked the early episodes, he saved us from cancellation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThat I was working with Carl Reiner\u2019s son, who happened to be one of the kindest people in show business, seemed unreal,\u201d the comic continued. \u201cI was naive at the time to how much his passion for us meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In a 2016 interview<\/a> with Howard Stern, Reiner, who cofounded the Castle Rock production company behind \u201cSeinfeld,\u201d recalled begging NBC honcho Brandon Tartikoff not to relegate the show to the dustbin of TV history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe knew we had a great show,\u201d Reiner told Stern<\/a>. \u201cThey wanted to take it off the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018We can\u2019t have this show. … What is this show? It\u2019s just people sitting around talking,\u2019\u201d Reiner continued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Reiner had built comedy cred as an actor on \u201cAll in the Family\u201d (1971-79) and as director and star of the mockumentary \u201cThis Is Spinal Tap\u201d (1984). \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally,\u201d the classic rom-com he helmed, would premiere just weeks after \u201cSeinfeld\u201d debuted as \u201cThe Seinfeld Chronicles\u201d in July 1989.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI had a screaming, crazy thing with Brandon Tartikoff at the time and I begged him and I said, \u2018Please, I promise you there\u2019ll be stories. You can\u2019t take this show off the air. It\u2019s going to be one of the great shows you\u2019ve ever had.\u2019\u201d Reiner told Stern.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The sitcom made a prophet of Reiner, earning 10 Emmys among 68 nominations<\/a> in becoming the zeitgeist comedy of the 1990s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cRob and Michele married right as our show was starting and they became an imprint for me of how it\u2019s supposed to work, each one broadening the other,\u201d Seinfeld concluded his homage. \u201cTheir death, together, is impossibly sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
