In Dec. 19.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to take Pandora for granted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moviegoers have now made three trips to director James Cameron\u2019s stunning alien planet, and have scaled the flying mountains, hiked among the bioluminescent plants, flown symbiotic dragons and swam in its pristine oceans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve probably picked up a few words of Na\u2019vi, the language of the big blue natives. They\u2019re quietly scoping out tree houses on Zillow.<\/p>\n<p>Yet even frequent visitors to Paris can\u2019t help but stare awestruck at the Eiffel Tower.<\/p>\n<p>The third film in the 16-year-old \u201cAvatar\u201d franchise, \u201cFire and Ash,\u201d may look and feel awfully familiar. The story hews closely to 2022\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/12\/13\/avatar-the-way-of-water-review-the-sequel-weve-been-waiting-for\/\">Way of Water<\/a>,\u201d which arrived like a Christmas present after a long 13-year hiatus. Rather than the significant time jump that began that tale, the action here picks up immediately from where the sequel left off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Narratively, as it sits smack-dab in the middle of a planned five films, this is the least satisfying chapter so far. Think more of a \u201cTwo Towers\u201d than an \u201cEmpire Strikes Back,\u201d which ain\u2019t too shabby.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jake Sully\u2019s kids, like Lo\u2019ak, take more responsibilities in the franchise\u2019s third movie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the science-fiction series, maintained with exceptional attention to detail by Cameron, remains a gargantuan spectacle unmatched by anything else in Hollywood. More than once during its three-hour-fifteen-minute runtime, I shook my head and laughed. How the hell did they do <em>that<\/em>?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cranks can mock the less-than-witty dialogue all they want. It is what it is. The fact is that this director knows the pulse of the moviegoing public better than any filmmaker alive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Number Three, with a reported price tag of more than $400 million, is the most visually glorious of the trio, adding fresh and imaginative beings and environments that further flesh out one of the all-time great fantasy locales.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jake Sully must protect his family while saving the increasingly under threat Pandora.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If \u201cFire and Ash\u201d makes one leap forward, it\u2019s that the main character starts to pass the baton. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Salda\u00f1a) are still the heroes, for sure, however their kids Lo\u2019ak (Britain Dalton) and adopted Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) are fighting the good fight in ways only they can.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their friend Spider (Jack Champion), the human teen who prefers his E.T. pals to his fellow homosapiens, is tested in one of \u201cFire and Ash\u201d\u2019s most emotional threads. And he evolves in a way that threatens the future of the planet.<\/p>\n<p>And while his pop Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who was reborn as a Na\u2019vi, is back to \u201cooh-rah\u201d-ing and seeking revenge against Jake, the battle is more homegrown than before.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Varang is the menacing leader of a new tribe \u2014 the Mangkwan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We meet a clan of violent and antagonistic Na\u2019vi called the Mangkwan, a grayscale group that lives among active volcanoes. In a franchise first, they\u2019re barbaric, rather than the perfect indigo angels that so far have populated Pandora. <\/p>\n<p>Their hissing leader, Varang (Oona Chaplin), makes a phenomenal villain. She\u2019s an kooky-but-scary femme fatale a la Famke Janssen in \u201cGoldenEye.\u201d The side she picks in this great oncoming war is a dangerous one.<\/p>\n<p>Because of it, we begin to sense that the inevitable climactic clash over Pandora will be much more complicated than simply bringing down a few boats and airships with the help of the Tulkun \u2014 those wise old whales who make their chatty return.<\/p>\n<p>The final confrontation in \u201cFire and Ash,\u201d aside from the addition of the Mangkwan, is a dead ringer for \u201cWay of Water\u201d \u2014 earth\u2019s air and sea vessels duke it out with the flying and swimming Pandorans. The Na\u2019vi sneak aboard, the Tulkun intervene.The scene is huge and incredibly cool. Again.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Quaritch still wants to seek revenge on Jake.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cameron\u2019s essential task for \u201cAvatar 4,\u201d which is set to hit theaters four years from now, will be to significantly advance the plot beyond incremental character developments and an anticipated abundance of beauty.\u00a0He needs to wind this baby down while amping it up.<\/p>\n<p>So far, \u201cAvatar\u201d has been judged by its breathtaking escapism and unparalleled epicness. And tese flying warriors have passed with flying colors. But its ultimate legacy will be impacted by the ending.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s at least six years away.
