{"id":2202325,"date":"2025-12-17T06:09:44","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T06:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2202325"},"modified":"2025-12-17T06:09:44","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T06:09:44","slug":"leawood-city-council-opposes-royals-stadium-at-aspiria-in-letter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/leawood-city-council-opposes-royals-stadium-at-aspiria-in-letter\/","title":{"rendered":"Leawood City Council opposes Royals stadium at Aspiria in letter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"pelcro-embedded-paywall\">\n<p><em>This story has been updated to include a statement from the Royals.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Opposition to a potential Royals baseball stadium at Overland Park\u2019s Aspiria campus has been so strong among Leawood residents and businesses that the Leawood City Council released a letter Monday night <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leawood.org\/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposing it in no uncertain terms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Councilmembers and Mayor Marc Elkins said they have been flooded with letters from the public against a new stadium for the Kansas City Royals at Aspiria, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/johnsoncountypost.com\/2025\/06\/04\/aspiria-check-in-261014\/\">on the former Sprint campus at 119th and Nall Avenue<\/a>. The location would put the stadium directly across the street from Leawood.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/johnsoncountypost.com\/2024\/11\/14\/could-royals-end-up-in-johnson-county-heres-what-we-know-right-now-247072\/\">For more than a year now<\/a>, the Royals have been hunting for a new location for a future ballpark, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/johnsoncountypost.com\/2025\/11\/04\/royals-survey-overland-park-stadium-273089\/\">the Aspiria campus is one of multiple locations that have been mentioned<\/a> since Jackson County, Missouri, voters last year rejected a proposal to fund a downtown stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s owners have not named a preferred location, but the Overland Park site has officially been in the running since <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/johnsoncountypost.com\/2025\/05\/28\/royals-aspiria-overland-park-mortgage-260614\/\">a Royal\u2019s affiliate acquired the mortgage on it in spring 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Leawood letter cites concerns of noise, lighting, public safety, transparency, etc.<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_220310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-220310\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/images.johnsoncountypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Marc-Elkins-2.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-220310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mayor Marc Elkins. File photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Leawood City Council\u2019s statement mentions concerns over noise, lighting, public safety and emergency access, among other things. It also cites a \u201clack of transparency\u201d by the state of Kansas about plans for the site, \u201cwhich has eroded trust that the residents\u2019 concerns will be heard and meaningfully considered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their letter also mentions recent statements from T-Mobile and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/johnsoncountypost.com\/2025\/12\/15\/royals-aspiria-jcc-impact-275885\/\">the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America<\/a>, two entities that would be direct neighbors of a ballpark. T-Mobile officials confirmed to the Post last week that they <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/johnsoncountypost.com\/2025\/12\/09\/t-mobile-leaving-if-royals-overland-park-275610\/\">would move their 3,500 local employees if a stadium<\/a> is built in proximity to their offices on the Aspiria campus.<\/p>\n<p>Councilmembers from Leawood enthusiastically agreed with the statement, which Elkins proposed.<\/p>\n<p>Councilmember Lisa Harrison said residents should be encouraged to \u201cwrite letters like they\u2019ve never written letters before\u201d to congressional and senatorial representatives, local government officials on either side of the city line, \u201canybody who calls themselves representatives of Overland Park, Johnson County or the state of Kansas. Get busy folks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Councilmember Chuck Sipple said, \u201cPeople did not move to Leawood to have the commercial establishment like a ball field in their backyard. They like a quiet way of life, an upscale community, and we pride ourselves on our parks and our trees and our safe streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Tuesday evening, the team said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Royals have a long history of working to make Greater Kansas City a better place. As such, we are deeply committed to building a stadium environment that prioritizes the health, safety and traffic concerns of our neighbors. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWherever we build our next generational home, the project will be guided by strong community collaboration. That continued Monday evening as about two dozen residents packed Overland Park City Hall\u2019s lobby, holding signs opposing a stadium at Aspiria.<\/p>\n<p>Most said things like, \u201cRead the room. The people who live, work, go to schools and hospitals, shop and drive here DON\u2019T WANT A STADIUM HERE\u201d and, \u201cAll the backroom deals in the world won\u2019t make this stink any less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ace Allen, who lives within walking distance of the Aspiria site in Overland Park, was one such resident.<\/p>\n<p>He said he doesn\u2019t think a stadium would \u201cfit this area at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a well-developed and developing, planned-out suburban community,\u201d Allen said. \u201cIt\u2019s almost nonsensical that they would want to put a square peg in a round hole, so to speak. This area is not built for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he\u2019s worried about the traffic and safety implications, but also the potential stadium\u2019s proximity to multiple schools, hospitals and the Jewish Community Center. At the same time, Allen is concerned that the elected officials who are supposed to represent him and his neighbors aren\u2019t listening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you picking up the phone for when they call? Because it doesn\u2019t look like you\u2019re picking up the phone when I call,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the people who brought signs to the lobby on Monday also spoke during public comment before the Overland Park City Council. It was one of the first times \u2014 if not the first time \u2014 the topic has come up in a formal public city council setting.<\/p>\n<p>He said that so far, no formal applications for development of a stadium or associated incentives have been submitted to the city, but any that might be submitted would be subject to the same review process as any application.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe city of Overland Park has a robust development review process. All development proposals must go through that process. It will evaluate issues like traffic, parking, pedestrian, access and noise. The community will have opportunities to share their thoughts and concerns,\u201d Skoog said, echoing previous written statements. \u201cAny stadium development must be good for Overland Park, Johnson County and the state of Kansas.
