Milwaukee singer-songwriter Trapper Schoepp began writing his latest album, \u201cOsborne<\/a>,\u201d on the day he entered a drug addiction treatment center in Minnesota.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI felt at the time, my personal, figurative \u2018house\u2019 had blown over, and so I wanted to build a new house to live in for a bit,\u201d Schoepp told WPR\u2019s \u201cWisconsin Today<\/a>.\u201d \u201cRecovery was very much a part of that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Last year, the musician checked into the Hazelden Betty Ford Treatment Center near St. Paul, Minnesota. No corporate filter.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n But Schoepp\u2019s stay in the center\u2019s Osborne unit brought to mind another famous resident with an almost identical name \u2014 the late heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne. Schoepp wrote the title track of the album on his first day in the Osborne unit.<\/p>\n \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, if Ozzy could do it, I can do it,\u2019\u201d Schoepp said. \u201cThere were guitars out and heavy metal themed artwork on the walls. There was just a really strong brotherhood in that unit.\u201d<\/p>\n Schoepp\u2019s relationship with painkillers began after he underwent spinal decompression surgery when he was 20 following injuries from BMX riding. His doctors prescribed several different painkillers after the surgery. He told WPR he leaned on the medications too much throughout his 20s.<\/p>\n \u201cI think doctors were treating me in the way that they knew how to treat me best at that time,\u201d Schoepp said. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to make yourself feel better, and I think that\u2019s what a lot of people were doing in the early days of the opioid epidemic \u2026 As someone who made it through and has seen the pain of that firsthand, I thought it was a duty of mine to come clean and write about that experience.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0Many of the tracks on the new album \u2014 \u201cTomorrow\u2019s For Quittin\u2019<\/a>\u201d and the album\u2019s title track, \u201cThe Osbournes<\/a>\u201d \u2014 are grounded in Schoepp\u2019s familiar folk genre, leaning into a gentle, stripped-back sound.<\/p>\n But other songs showcase an intense, rock sound. \u201cSatan is Real (Satan is a Sackler)\u201d pairs a distorted guitar with angry lyrics pointing a finger at the Sackler family, the founders of Purdue Pharma and the makers of OxyContin, as culpable in America\u2019s opioid crisis.<\/p>\n \u201cThey started it all \/ They know it\u2019s true \/ They started the fire \/ That I walked into,\u201d Schoepp sings in the chorus.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is so much pain that the Sackler family has caused America,\u201d Schoepp said. \u201cI wanted to write that song as a way to show solidarity with the victims, survivors and families who have been affected by their malicious actions.\u201d<\/p>\n Schoepp said he empathizes with others who are wrangling with sobriety.<\/p>\n \u201cYour recovery is not a race, and there\u2019s no shame for slipping up, and there\u2019s no shame in maybe not being ready to go there yet,\u201d Schoepp said. \u201cI think we live in a very black-and-white culture where it\u2019s like all or nothing, and not everyone is in the same place.
