Varijashree places this moment in continuity rather than novelty. \u201cThis has been happening for decades. The internet only made it more accessible,&#8221; she says.<!-- --> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/jagadeesh\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\">Jagadeesh<\/a> observes how global platforms feed back into local ecosystems. \u201cYoung people who may never have heard this music before start following it,\u201d he says, recalling festival audiences encountering Carnatic-rooted work for the first time. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/madhuri\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\">Madhuri<\/a> finds reassurance in this shift There are younger audiences now. That interest in culture matters,\u201d she tells us.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">\u2018Tradition does not shrink when it travels\u2019<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"20\"\/>Across voices, one belief remains constant: tradition is not threatened by movement. \u201cTradition only grows. This entire journey is driven by curiosity,\u201d says Jagadeesh. Varijashree calls the present moment a \u201cgolden era\u201d, but also a fragile one. \u201cThere is a volcano of independent music. I just wish it gets more space and visibility,\u201d she says. Madhuri notes how genre boundaries are dissolving. <!-- -->She says, \u201cThe separateness is disappearing.<!-- --> Composition-led work is finally being heard.\u201d Karthik, however, returns to the idea of experience. He says, \u201cEvery concert should become something you carry with you. Something that stays.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"25\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">\u2018Improvisation is where the music learns to travel\u2019<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"27\"\/>If discipline forms the base, improvisation becomes the bridge. \u201cI got inclined towards jazz because of the improvisational formats. <!-- -->That curiosity is an everyday thing. It\u2019s always a work in progress,\u201d says Varijashree. She strips the idea of crossover to its essentials. \u201cI call it sa-ri-ga-ma-pa-da-ni. They call it do-re-mi-fa-fa. But the notes are the same,\u201d she explains.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>The sound of Carnatic music has been my first mother tongue. Everything else I approach through that sensibility<\/p>\n<p>Varijashree Venugopal<small\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"37\"\/>Jagadeesh sees this openness as a shared instinct. \u201cBoth Carnatic music and jazz are driven by personal exploration,\u201d he says., <!-- -->adding, \u201cIt\u2019s a continuous dialogue. There is no finishing point.\u201d Madhuri notes how this dialogue has evolved. She says, \u201cEarlier, it felt like consciously putting things together. Now it feels seamless. It\u2019s no longer separate.\u201d <span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"41\"\/>For Karthik, improvisation is also about precision. \u201cEvery second counts,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat sound fits, where silence works, where to push tempo. In a seven-minute piece, every decision matters.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"44\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"_oWMq   \">\n<p>You cannot escape our roots and our foundation. Even when the music leans towards jazz, it remains fundamentally Indian<\/p>\n<p>Madhuri<small\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"46\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">\u2018Collaboration is not blending styles, it is learning to listen\u2019<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"48\"\/>Across genres and geographies, collaboration is described less as fusion and more as attentive listening. \u201cYou learn each other\u2019s culture, you learn to respect each other\u2019s music. Composition becomes the meeting point,\u201d says Jagadeesh.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"50\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"_oWMq   \">\n<p>While new disciplines and platforms emerge, tradition remains. The tradition only grows<\/p>\n<p>Jagadeesh MR<small\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"52\"\/> <span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"54\"\/>Varijashree agrees that unpredictability is essential. \u201cYou can\u2019t predict what will come out of it,\u201d she says, explaining, \u201cEveryone involved takes something back.\u201d <!-- -->Often, it\u2019s not technique but nuance \u2014 \u201chow space is used, how emotion is controlled. Sometimes the silence between two words decides the impact,\u201d she says. Madhuri points out how this process is often misunderstood. She points out, \u201cPeople think it\u2019s jugalbandi.<!-- --> It\u2019s not. It\u2019s not separate worlds coming together.\u201d Karthik sees every collaboration as a reset. \u201cNothing is repeated,\u201d he says, adding, \u201cEvery time, it feels like a first.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"60\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">\u2018Music is the fabric of life\u2019<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"62\"\/>For musicians who now perform across continents, Carnatic music was never something they consciously \u201centered\u201d. It was home. \u201cThe sound of Carnatic music has been the fabric of my life,\u201d says Varijashree. She recalls curiosity always existing alongside discipline. \u201cI would write notations to any music I listened to \u2014 film songs, Western pop, anything. I was trying to understand it using the vocabulary I already had.<!-- -->\u201d Madhuri echoes the permanence of that grounding. \u201cYou cannot escape our roots and our foundation,\u201d she says. Even as her work increasingly leans towards jazz, \u201ceverything remains fundamentally Indian.\u201d For Karthik, this openness has historical precedent. \u201cPioneers took Carnatic music as the core and spread it over time,\u201d he says. Jagadeesh underlines that expansion does not dilute tradition. \u201cAs new disciplines and platforms emerge, tradition remains.
