Four years ago, Doug Blumer and his wife, Nancy Irish, who perform together in the band Bohemian Highway, found themselves wondering about a musical blind spot on the calendar.<\/p>\n

Most musicians, they noted, play on New Year\u2019s Eve. But what about the day after?<\/p>\n

The question led to the creation of \u201cHair of the Dog,\u201d an annual New Year\u2019s Day show that has since become a local tradition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to do a gig, but we didn\u2019t want to do New Year\u2019s Eve,\u201d said Blumer, 71. \u201cWe were getting older, and our fan base was getting older.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of a midnight countdown, Blumer suggested a midafternoon performance on Jan. 1, an idea that appealed to musicians and audiences alike. Drawing on the familiar phrase for easing a hangover \u2013 \u201chair of the dog that bit you\u201d \u2013 he and Irish named the event accordingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe drew a picture of a dog, and it\u2019s been on our posters ever since,\u201d Blumer said.<\/p>\n
