recently sat down for an interview with \u201cThe Upload with Brooke Taylor\u201d podcast<\/b><\/a> and he opened up about what the tragedy was like for him.<\/p>\n\u201cIt was so out of nowhere,\u201d Smith said. \u201cJust in a moment, your entire \u2026 like a tornado runs through your house, and there\u2019s so much grief and there\u2019s so much trauma from that intense, intense trauma. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a darkness in that, you just can\u2019t \u2014 there\u2019s no words, right?\u201d he added. \u201cIt felt like a tornado just blowing through my house. You don\u2019t have a concept of reality and what is going on, and all you have is the people you love, and the people that are around you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Smith revealed that he turned his phone off for a month and \u201clocked\u201d himself inside at his parents\u2019 house in the aftermath of it all. <\/p>\n
He returned to the public eye on July 31 with a performance at the Grand Ole Opry. <\/p>\n
\u201cTonight, I am going to perform again, and the truth is, in the very first months of tragedy, I found it hard to imagine ever stepping on a stage again,\u201d he wrote on social media. \u201cThe moment tragedy came, I knew that my heart had no way to process it.<\/p>\n
Smith wrote that he \u201cstayed isolated from the world,\u201d in the days that followed the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spent most of my time with friends who had stopped by the house, or just me and Jesus,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI turned off my phone, and the world, and simply guarded my mind, processing the pain with people around me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Earlier in July he also returned to social media to address the incident. <\/p>\n
\u201cFour weeks ago, I was involved in a tragic vehicle accident that resulted in the loss of a life,\u201d Smith wrote on Instagram earlier this month. \u201cNot a day has gone by that I haven\u2019t grieved, prayed, and mourned for Ms. Dobbins and her family. My heart is broken in a way I\u2019ve never experienced, and I still struggle to fully process the weight of it all. I ask that you continue to lift the Dobbins family up in prayer by name, asking for God\u2019s peace to surround them each day.<\/p>\n
\u201cOut of respect for everyone involved and to give space for grieving, I made the decision to step away from shows these past few weeks,\u201d he added. \u201cI have always found that making music and playing shows is a place of healing for me \u2014 but for this moment, it was important for me to take time away.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m thankful to serve a God who is near to the brokenhearted, and I have leaned on him every step of the way,\u201d he added. \u201cThrough tragedy, I have learned that God is more faithful than I could have ever known before.\u201d<\/p>\n
