HBO\u2019s \u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d has a more svelte two-year hiatus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, unlike \u201cGame of Thrones,\u201d these shows aren\u2019t so fantastic that we pine for them. That\u2019s why I think reality TV is so popular \u2014 it lets audiences follow characters at a regular clip. The Real Housewives don\u2019t need a 36-month breather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pitt\u201d has figured this out to great success. So has \u201cHacks.\u201d Audiences want better stuff, yes, but they also miss the old network TV pace and reliability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cThe Queen of Versailles\u201d on Broadway closed early and lost $22.5 million. <span class=\"credit\">Nancy Kaszerman\/ZUMA Press Wire \/ SplashNews.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On Broadway: Fix the new musical problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The theater industry has spent the last four years blithely pretending Broadway wasn\u2019t in shambles because there was at least a healthy supply of inventory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last season had 16 new musicals. Most of them weren\u2019t any good, but what else is new?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now everybody is finally freaking out, because there are only six. And most are less appealing than \u201cSix.\u201d One, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/09\/entertainment\/queen-of-versailles-review-kristin-chenoweth-returns-to-broadway-in-a-dire-musical-that-needs-a-wrecking-ball\/\">The Queen of Versailles<\/a>\u201d starring Kristin Chenoweth, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/25\/entertainment\/kristin-chenoweths-queen-of-versailles-to-end-early-after-dire-reviews\/\">just closed on Dec. 21<\/a> at a reported loss of $22.5 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recently announced addition, the funny Celine Dion camp fest \u201cTitanique,\u201d already ran off-Broadway for three years and was staged around the world. And next Spring\u2019s \u201cBeaches\u201d has been tweaked across the country for more than a decade. Demonstrably there has not been much wind beneath its wings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe season\u2019s only hope is \u2018The Lost Boys\u2019,\u201d an insider said. Uh oh. Vampire musicals have never been the lifeblood of Midtown. Just ask Elton John.<\/p>\n<p>One problem is that investors are afraid to put money into new Broadway musicals because it\u2019s almost a foregone conclusion that they\u2019ll lose it. It\u2019s gone from a risky business to a foolish one.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Too many concessions have been made to unions that have driven up costs to astronomical highs. So, now there are fewer jobs in musicals for performers and craftspeople, and minimalist plays are being cast out of Hollywood. Go figure.<\/p>\n<p>One Tony winner told me working out of town is the best option these days. That\u2019s obviously not good for New York.<\/p>\n<p>Broadway is at a tipping point \u2014 and its leaders must face facts immediately.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cThe Naked Gun\u201d was a welcome return to hilarious comedy on the big screen. <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Paramount\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>At the Movies: Please bring back actual comedies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>TV\u2019s comedy trouble has come to the cinema.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the big screen, hilarity has been swapped with lightness and eccentricity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/09\/entertainment\/bugonia-review-emma-stone-stars-in-another-flippin-weird-yorgos-lanthimos-movie-about-conspiracy-theorists\/\">Bugonia<\/a>,\u201d in which Emma Stone gets kidnapped and shaved by dirty freaks who think she\u2019s an alien, and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/24\/entertainment\/jay-kelly-review-george-clooney-navel-gazes-in-a-bland-hollywood-satire\/\">Jay Kelly<\/a>,\u201d in which a famous actor quietly has a breakdown, are classified as comedies.<\/p>\n<p>What, pray tell, was the funniest part of \u201cBugonia\u201d? The chemical castration scene?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, films like \u201cRush Hour,\u201d \u201cAnchorman\u201d and \u201cAustin Powers\u201d are hardly getting made anymore.
