A new study describes 2025 as a \u201cGreat Recession\u201d for women directors, with just nine women directors attached to the 100 top-grossing films at the U.S. box office.<\/p>\n

According to the latest report from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, of the 111 directors who helmed those films, nine of them were women: Nisha Ganatra<\/a> (\u201cFreakier Friday<\/a>\u201d), Emma Tammi<\/a> (\u201cFive Nights at Freddy\u2019s 2<\/a>\u201d), Domee Shi<\/a> (\u201cElio<\/a>\u201d), Madeline Sharafian<\/a> (\u201cElio<\/a>\u201d), Celine Song<\/a> (\u201cMaterialists<\/a>\u201d), Jennifer Kaytin Robinson<\/a> (\u201cI Know What You Did Last Summer<\/a>\u201d), Maggie Kang<\/a> (\u201cKPop Demon Hunters<\/a>\u201d), Hikari<\/a> (\u201cRental Family<\/a>\u201d) and previous best director Oscar winner Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/a> (\u201cHamnet<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n

The 2025 figure represents a steep drop from 2024, when the percentage of women directors on the 100 top-grossing films was 13.4% (15 directors), when the U.S. was in the throes of the financial Great Recession.<\/p>\n
