I first met Rob Reiner<\/a> on a red carpet, back when I was brand new to celebrity journalism and painfully aware of how easily I could embarrass myself.<\/p>\n

I was young, underqualified and convinced that everyone around could see straight through me.<\/p>\n

For a terrifying second, I couldn’t even remember his real name. I had to physically stop myself from calling him ‘Meathead.’<\/p>\n

What came out of my mouth instead was worse.<\/p>\n

I stammered out a rambling, awkward question that had nothing to do with the film he was there to promote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I remember realizing halfway through that it made no sense, and being unable to stop myself anyway.<\/p>\n

He didn’t look annoyed. He didn’t glance past me toward the next outlet. Instead, he smiled – genuinely amused – and placed a heavy, reassuring hand on my shoulder.<\/p>\n

‘There’s no reason to be nervous,’ he said calmly. ‘This isn’t surgery. Nobody’s going to die.’<\/p>\n

Then he looked down at the handheld tape recorder clutched in my palm and chuckled.<\/p>\n

‘Also, your tape recorder isn’t rolling,’ he added. ‘You might want to turn it on before we go any further.’<\/p>\n

I tested that claim in 2010, when he appeared in Orlando for AARP’s enormous Orlando@50+ National Event & Expo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was a massive production – thousands of attendees, cavernous halls and panels featuring Larry King, Gladys Knight and Whoopi Goldberg.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reiner spoke candidly about ageism in Hollywood, about the quiet doors that begin to close even when your resume is stacked with success.<\/p>\n

After one panel, I approached him and asked if he remembered me.<\/p>\n

In 2013, when Jean Stapleton died, I called him for comment. During the conversation, I mentioned I was trying to reach Norman Lear.<\/p>\n

‘I’ll give you his number,’ he said. ‘Tell him I gave it to you.’<\/p>\n

Lear did ask how I’d gotten his number. That awkwardness evaporated once I explained.<\/p>\n

When Lear died in 2023, I called Reiner again. We caught up briefly before he spoke thoughtfully about Lear’s legacy. As we wrapped up, he said, almost offhandedly, ‘I’m sure we’ll talk again.’<\/p>\n
