WALA<\/a>) – Thousands gathered in downtown Mobile Tuesday night for the annual Moon Pie Over Mobile celebration, marking the start of the new year with live music, a parade and traditional festivities.<\/p>\nThe event drew families and visitors to downtown Mobile, including newcomers to the area looking to experience local traditions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to just to absorb everything that Mobile has to offer because we actually just moved here,\u201d said one attendee.<\/p>\n
Many attendees took time to reflect on the past year\u2019s highlights, with family milestones taking center stage for several participants.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would say us finding out that we were having four grandbabies all in 2026. That was one of the best, I\u2019d say the best thing we found out this year,\u201d said one grandmother.<\/p>\n
Other significant moments included engagements and new babies. Bill Garrett said he \u201cgot engaged and my family\u2019s here,\u201d while another woman cited \u201chaving our daughter\u201d as her year\u2019s highlight.<\/p>\n
The celebration featured live music on the main stage, a Mardi Gras umbrella contest and a second-line parade through downtown streets.<\/p>\n
A centerpiece of the event was the annual cutting of what organizers call the world\u2019s largest edible moon pie, weighing 55 pounds. Thousands gathered to see the massive dessert and sample pieces of the Mobile tradition.<\/p>\n
Attendees also shared their goals for the coming year. A young woman said she plans to \u201cjust go to college, make new experiences, have fun, make new friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caleb Overstreet said his resolution is to \u201cjust better myself for my family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other goals included earning a GED and finding better work-life balance, with one woman saying she wants to \u201cwork less and have more fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
The celebration culminated with the traditional moon pie drop at midnight, with the iconic symbol descending hundreds of feet in 60 seconds as the crowd counted down to 2026.<\/p>\n
