Loren&#8217;s hometown of Corning, New York, and his winters on Jekyll Island, Georgia, offered two peaceful places where music and community shaped his daily life.<\/p>\n<p>In late 2017, everything changed. After months of worsening shortness of breath and repeated misdiagnoses, Loren \u2014 a guitarist with 40 years of experience \u2014 flew to Nashville, Tennessee,\u00a0to play a show with a friend.\u00a0Loren\u00a0ended up in the\u00a0emergency department\u00a0before he could play\u00a0\u2014\u00a0diagnosed with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/medical-professionals\/transplant-medicine\/news\/advanced-heart-failure-complexities-and-when-to-refer-for-specialty-care\/mqc-20504989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advanced heart failure<\/a>.\u00a0He remembers the shock of that moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Out of the blue, my life\u00a0completely\u00a0shifted,&#8221;\u00a0Loren says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0receiving that diagnosis, Loren spent\u00a013 days\u00a0in the hospital\u00a0in Nashville.\u00a0Once stable,\u00a0he\u00a0returned to\u00a0upstate\u00a0New York and continued care at\u00a0a\u00a0local hospital\u00a0where specialists determined he needed a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/ventricular-assist-device\/about\/pac-20384529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">left ventricular assist device (LVAD)<\/a>. The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/mayo-clinic-minute-heart-patients-helped-by-ventricular-assist-devices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LVAD\u00a0<\/a>is\u00a0a mechanical pump that supports the heart by helping the left ventricle circulate blood throughout the body.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0about seven years with the LVAD, new\u00a0complications\u00a0in 2024 meant it was time to revisit transplant. By then, Lorena already\u00a0knew\u00a0about\u00a0Mayo\u00a0Clinic in Florida.
