Already a barreling force of galactically fierce electronic indie pop, the latest incarnation of Rituals finds Lopez paired up with a new backing band: ever-expansive jazz\/funk\/soul sonic architects and omnipresent local performers <b>LabRats<\/b>. With a few shows under their belts, this new collaboration is prepping a debut album, \u201cOTRA,\u201d for an early 2026 release &#8211; to say we are intrigued about what they\u2019re putting down on wax is an understatement. Wistful dreamscape-riding indie pop act <b>Rosemother <\/b>opens (7 p.m. Thurs. Jan. 22. $30-$35).<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The music series serves as an extension of the museum\u2019s current exhibit, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crockerart.org\/art\/exhibitions\/making-moves-a-collection-of-feminisms\">Making Moves: A Collection of Feminisms<\/a>,\u201d a multi-artist curation likewise inspired by hooks\u2019 writings, which \u201cexamines the evolving complexities of femininity and feminism that have inspired generations of visual artists.\u201d Two additional \u201cCome Closer\u201d events are on tap before the exhibition wraps in early May. Spitfire hip-hop and spoken word artist <b>Ruby Ibarra<\/b> performs on Feb. 26, with a DJ set from <b>Mrs. Organic<\/b>, with biting synth-laden post-punk act <b>DEFEM<\/b>, alongside the aforementioned Lopez doing an opening DJ set, closing the series out on April 23 (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crockerart.org\/events\/4208\/come-closer-rituals-of-mine\">crockerart.org\/events<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-infographic\" wp_automatic_readability=\"7.2947368421053\">\n<p><em>Local artists, message Aaron Davis on Instagram if you have upcoming shows, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/adavis_threetosee\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">@adavis_threetosee<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>A pair of tin anniversaries &#8211; that\u2019s ten years to you &#8211; figure to make for a rowdy January at the Press Club. First up, adored indie pop-punk trio <b>Polyorchids <\/b>emerges for its first gig in several years to mark a decade since the release of the ebullient \u201cPopgun E.P.,\u201d with support from genre-bending <b>Lokeigh <\/b>(aka Tyler-Ferris Masteller, formerly of I Kill Cameron and Dandelion Massacre) zigzagging psych rock act <b>Tashow<\/b> and punk rock upstart <b>Chonker<\/b> (8 p.m. Sat. Jan. 10. $16.50). Later in the month, psych rock maestros <b>Vinnie Guidera and the Dead Birds<\/b> celebrate 10 years since the release of their beautifully fraught \u201cLows,\u201d flanked by enigmatic folk artist <b>High Bias<\/b> and affable indie rock troupe <b>Citizen Snips<\/b> (8 p.m. Fri. Jan. 23. $16.50. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/pressclubsac.com\/events\/\">pressclubsac.com\/events<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>A quick spin through <b>Weakened Friends\u2019<\/b> newest LP, \u201cFeels Like Hell,\u201d gives one that early sense of a proverbial \u201cthe gloves are off\u201d record &#8211; ironic for a sludgy rock trio that didn\u2019t seem to previously shy away from a good-natured bareknuckle romp. But dropping the gloves can feel like an exasperating last act born of desperation and hopelessness &#8211; a door that slams behind you, leaves you in the dark and seldom reopens. \u201cFeels Like Hell\u201d ultimately isn\u2019t that record. It\u2019s a striking guitar-driven grunge pop embrace of chaos, a bellowing \u201ceff this\u201d in a way that resets the compass and chugs luminously forward, rather than toiling in that aforementioned darkness. Vocalist Sonia Sturino\u2019s newly adopted gender-nonconformity yields a nonconforming and strikingly honest razor-edged vocal approach that was absent (or perhaps just cautiously withheld) from the group\u2019s previous works &#8211; raw and unencumbered in the most endearing of ways. The guttural wallop of opening salvo \u201cTough Luck (Bleed Me Out)\u201d somehow makes it make perfect sense that the record wraps with an unexpectedly driving cover of Natalie Imbruglia\u2019s \u201cTorn\u201d &#8211; trust us, it works! <b>Knoxey <\/b>opens (7 p.m. Sun. Jan. 25 at Folsom Hotel, 703 Sutter St, Folsom. $25. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"http:\/\/folsomhotelsaloon.com\/events\">folsomhotelsaloon.com\/events<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>It would be tough to pin down just what <b>Jim Ward<\/b> has in store for his \u201cLive &amp; Alone\u201d solo tour, stopping off at Cafe Colonial this month. He\u2019s the vocalist and co-founder of seminal rock act Sparta and former guitarist of post-hardcore cult heroes At The Drive-In, while also sporting a pair of albums as a solo artist &#8211; each a departure from his other projects but rife with the sort of jagged-edge guitar work and rumbling songwriting that one would expect. Ward is \u201ctrying a little bit different version of playing by myself\u201d on this tour &#8211; with \u201cpedals, guitars and amps\u201d according to his <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DR0xhEcEUV7\/?hl=en\">tour promo vid<\/a>. Whatever that yields, Ward remains a prodigious and workmanlike subterranean rock figure. <b>Broken Tapes<\/b>, the psych-folk offshoot of the Snares\u2019 Izzie Gomez, opens (8 p.m. Wed. Jan. 14. 3520 Stockton Blvd. $20. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/cafecolonial916.com\/event\/jim-ward-of-at-the-drive-in-and-sparta\/cafe-colonial\/sacramento-california\/\">cafecolonial916.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll fully admit to enjoying a \u201ccocktail hour\u201d start time for a show &#8211; especially one that makes the bar order that much easier to land on (whiskey and cheap lagers feel requisite). We\u2019re further big fans of ragtag country acts that maintain only a paper-thin partition between country and surf rock. Welcome back to Torch Club, <b>Jenny Don\u2019t and the Spurs<\/b>. The madcap Portland, OR country cowpunk troupe are stewards of the genre\u2019s most gilded eras &#8211; balanced helpings of glitz and grime, equal parts gala and gutter (5 p.m. Sat. Jan. 31 at Torch Club. $15; tickets at door only. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"http:\/\/torchclub.net\/\">torchclub.net<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll end with a tip of the cap to Claimstake Brewing, which at the end of 2025 opted to shutter its homey Rancho Cordova taproom. That\u2019s a hole in the local brewing scene and Rancho\u2019s adored <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barreldistrict.com\/\">Barrel District<\/a>, to be sure, but likewise a bittersweet adieu to the makeshift music venue that owner and brewer Brian Palmer had curated there. From their regular Kith &amp; Kin music festivals to numerous midweek visits from touring folk\/Americana artists, it was a special place &#8211; especially so in light of the tragic but heartwarming bond shared between <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/food-drink\/beer\/article238201484.html\">Palmer and Oregon-based folk artist Austin Quattlebaum<\/a>, who visited more than half a dozen times. The future of Claimstake\u2019s brewing endeavors remains up in the air, but with the taproom dark, for now we\u2019ll simply say thanks for the years of music and beer.
