reporters he intends to follow through on previously-made threats to remove the whiskey from store shelves in the province, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Monday he \u201ccan\u2019t Queen\u2019s Park on Monday. \u201cBut I\u2019m not going to waste another bottle of Crown Royal dumping it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford described the decision to close an Ontario bottling plant \u201cas dumb as a bag of hammers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Plant to close in February<\/h3>\n<p data-async=\"\">Reacting to news that spirits giant Diageo planned to shutter its Crown Royal bottling plant in Amherstburg \u2014 a small community around 20 km south of Windsor \u2014 and move production to the United States, Ford famously <a target=\"_blank\" data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" out=\"\" a=\"\" bottle=\"\" of=\"\" crown=\"\" royal=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/lilley-unleashed-doug-ford-dumps-out-bottle-of-crown-royal\">dumped out a bottle of Crown Royal<\/a> during a Sept. 2, 2025 news conference.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Diageo insisted the plant\u2019s closure \u2014 which will also see the end of around 200 jobs \u2014 is not a sign the company is abandoning Canada, and that the deciion to shutter the plant was an effort to streamline and solidify its supply chains.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"js-widget-content to retain sales.<\/p>\n<h3>Ford \u201cwrong\u201d to remove Crown Royal: advocacy group<\/h3>\n<p>In a statement issued Monday afternoon, Jay Goldberg of the Consumer Choice Centre said Ford\u2019s decision to take Crown Royal off the shelves goes against Ford\u2019s long-time advocacy for increased consumer choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis stated intention to take Crown Royal off the shelves at LCBO stores is an abandonment of that legacy,\u201d Goldberg said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers deserve to decide what kind of alcohol they want to buy, be it produced in Canada, the United States, or around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crown Royal, Goldberg said, will still be produced and bottled in Canada after the Amherstburg plant closure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only thing this move will serve to do is start a conversation in Ontario about why consumers cannot buy spirits at places other than the LCBO, which is a long overdue conversation that\u2019s worth having,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p
